Over this time, WWF's focus has evolved from localized efforts in favors of single species and individual habitats to an ambitious strategy to preserve biodiversity and achieve sustainable development across the globe. For decades, WWF has been a leader in developing transformational partnerships with leading organizations both from the public and the private sectors.

WWF Thailand is actively contributing to the objectives of the Global Policy Pillar of the network’s No Plastic in Nature Initiative.  Strategically located in Bangkok where the ASEAN Secretariat, UNEP Secretariat, COBSEA as well as other regional organizations are located, WWF Thailand plays a significant role in coordinating and liaising with these regional organizations, while at the same time engaging the national governments, through its various relevant ministries, to advance the policy ask of WWF.

WWF’s No Plastic in Nature initiative was founded in 2018 and its goal is to stop leakage of plastic by 2030. The initiative is organized by 3 Pillars: Policy, Markets and Cities, and Global Plastics Campaign providing cross-cutting support to all three workstreams.

Cities Pillar - With institutional funding and charitable giving, WWF Thailand is working on Cities projects in plastic hotspots in South East Asia with a key focus on city policy, collection and waste management. To date, the pillar has raised close to $30M USD to work on projects in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and Hong Kong.

Policy Pillar - The global plastic policy work is one of the three key pillars of the global WWF “No plastics in nature” initiative developed by the Oceans and Markets Practices, collaborating closely with the WWF International Campaigns Team. The global plastics policy pillar will develop and advocate for policy solutions at the global level that can deliver the WWF vision of no plastic leakage into nature by 2030.  The main long term goal is to establish a new legally binding treaty to eliminate plastic discharge into the oceans, securing commitments by at least 50 countries to sign the agreement by 2021 that is ratified and enters into force by 2025.

The Plastic Smart Cities of WWF-Thailand is implementing in 4 pilot cities: Hatyai, Surat Thani, Patong and Hua-Hin to develop and adapt scalable action-programs to stop plastic waste pollution and transit to a circular economy.
