Position: Gender Specialist

Project – USAID Wildlife Asia

The USAID Wildlife Asia Activity seeks to significantly reduce wildlife crime in Southeast Asia and China by employing a comprehensive regional cooperation approach. Specifically Wildlife Asia will (i) Reduce consumer demand for wildlife and wildlife products in target areas; (ii) Strengthen regional law enformedment capacity and coordination; (iii) Increase commitment to addressing counter wildlife trafficking (CWT); and, (iv) Support the USAID Regional Development Mission for Asia’s (RDMA’s) regional coordination of CWT stakeholders and efforts to strengthen the US Government (USG) interagency CWT initiatives. The USAID Wildlife Asia Activity’s geographic scope includes all ASEAN countries, with a focus on the Lower Mekong (Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia) and China. 

Role

The Gender Specialist will be responsible for ensuring the integration of gender strategies across all project interventions, working with component leads to incorporate appropriate social inclusion activities and targets into project design and implementation.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Lead the design and implementation of USAID Wildlife Asia women empowerment strategies and integration of gender across all program activities to increase the inclusiveness of CWT efforts.
• Oversee the integration of gender into the Wildlife Asia monitoring and evaluation and learning strategies.
• Carry out the Gender Implementation Plan and update the plan annually, providing inputs into the project annual work plan with identified activities and expected results.
• Develop and implement a capacity building plan to strengthen capacity in women’s empowerment of project staff, implementing partners, and key stakeholders.
• Contribute to the project’s behavior change strategy as it relates to women.
• Contribute to quarterly and annual reports and lead the development of success stories.
• Participate in studies, pilots and field tests of interventions and monitor inclusion guidelines and approaches.
• Review and advise on project documents, including work plans, strategies, and grant documents, ensuring that approaches and messages are gender sensitive and appropriate.
• Lead initiatives incorporating social inclusion methodologies to ensure equitable participation in CWT efforts.
• Contribute to monthly, quarterly, and annual progress reports.
• Develop success stories which illustrate project progress and impact on women.

Reporting

The Gender Specialist will report to the Chief of Party (COP).

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in sociology, gender studies, economics or related field.
• Minimum 5 years relevant and progressive work experience, in the area of gender, youth in development, environment, wildlife conservation or related areas.
• Experience conducting social research and analysis; developing and facilitating training to professional groups including law enforcement and wildlife NGOs.
• Understanding of USAID’s Countering Wildlife Trafficking techniques and approaches including gender inclusion and social behavior change communications. 

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in sociology, gender studies, economics or related field.
• Experience working in gender in South East Asia and/or China.
• Experience working on USAID programs.
• Experience building local capacity of gender organizations
