The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to:
i. Treat and care for patients with malaria.
ii. Undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment.
iii) To advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.
Since 2009, SMRU is engaged also in Tuberculosis program with activities on active and passive case findings, diagnosis and treatment of TB patients with updated protocol and best quality of care in full cooperation with national programs and other stakeholders
Drivers will be based in Mae Sot but will normally be expected to drive between all SMRU sites in Tassongyang, Maeramart, Mae Sot ,Poppra and ocassionally to Umphang as well as Mae Sa Rieng Districts.
Tasks/ Responsibilities
- Drive SMRU staffs and patients to and from SMRU sites visitors and elsewhere as required for Unit business
- Deliver supplies between sites, collect supplies from local suppliers, deliver specimens and samples to and from hospital and deliver or collect supplies from the bus station
- Ocassionally rotate to SMRU sites as needed
- Take responsibility for the vehicle that is allocated to the driver for the week
- Ensure that vehicle is well maintained, safe and clean, and take to garage for routine maintenance and repairs
- Fill up with petrol as required
- Explain nature of business and journies to police, military and land transportation minstry checkpoints as required
- Other tasks as requested by the Unit
- Ready for any assignment of Unit requiretment
Essential Criteria
- Current driving licence – minimum one year
- Experience of both city and rural driving
- Fluency in Thai and Karen
- Good knowledge of vehicle maintenance
- Good communication skill
Desirable Criteria
- Basic spoken English and Burmese
- Able to work underpressure
