The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to:
i. Treat and care for patients with malaria.
ii. Undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment.
The main purpose of this post is to perform Microbiology diagnostic procedures including bacterial identification, antibiotic sensitivity testing, serological assays and molecular assays. In addition the post holder will support the research activities of the department.
Tasks/Responsibilities
- Be able to following SOPs and contribute to their review.
- Follow the rules of the laboratory including health and safety rules.
- Perform routine diagnostic tests including urine culture, blood culture, bacterial isolation and identification, CSF and antibiotic sensitivity methods.
- To perform routine molecular methods including Influenza PCR assays.
- To be competent in specimen processing including specimen receipt, data entry and result reporting.
- Gain a full understanding of the procedures performed and the theory behind them.
- To perform quality assurance methods e.g. quality checks on media and antibiotics.
- Maintain records, including filling out and signing forms/worksheets.
- Maintain stocks, including stock control and ensuring stocks are correctly labelled and stored appropriately.
- Ensuring equipment is used correctly and maintained.
- Communicate on a daily basis with laboratory heads.
- Supervise laboratory assistants.
- Train other members of staff when asked to do so.
- Participate in departmental tutorials.
Essential Criteria for the post-holder
- Bachelors’ degree or Masters’ degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology or related subject
- Experience of working in a research or clinical laboratory
- Good spoken and written English
- Good team player
- Ability to work within a multinational team
