The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to:
i. Treat and care for patients with malaria.
ii. Undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment.
iii. To advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.
SMRU is based in Mae Sot where the main laboratories are based. The laboratories receive samples from several clinics along the Thailand-Myanmar border. The main purpose of this post is to assist the Microbiology laboratory technicians, including bacteriology, virology and Mycobacterium tuberculosis activities.
Tasks/Responsibilities
- Be able to following SOPs.
- Follow the rules of the laboratory including health and safety rules.
- Be competent in specimen processing including specimen receipt, data entry and result reporting.
- Assist routine diagnostic tests for Mycobacterium tuberculosis including microscopy and PCR.
- Assist routine microbiology testing including setting up urine cultures and blood cultures.
- Reagent preparation
- Perform quality assurance methods e.g. QC of smear stains.
- Maintain records, including filling out and signing forms/worksheets.
- Maintain stocks, including stock control and ensuring stocks are correctly labelled and stored appropriately.
- Ensuring equipment is used correctly and maintained.
- Ensuring work spaces are kept clean and tidy.
- Waste management
Preferable Criteria
- Experience of working in a research or clinical laboratory
- Good spoken and written English
- Good team player
- Ability to work within a multinational team
