TERMS OF REFERENCE (ToR)

For a Research assistant, Thai-English translator within the HABITABLE Subproject “Gender and social equity"

 

Project background

Within the scope of a research project on environmental change and human mobility, an assistant for empirical data collection in Chaiyaphum province is required. Financed by the European Union, the project associates 21 partners. In Thailand, the project counts with the Raks Thai Foundation and the Stockholm Environment Institute Asia. About the Position

Working location(s): Chaiyaphum province, Bangkok.

Duration:  August - September 2022 (1 month and a half)

Accommodation/Transport: Transport, food and accommodation during field stay will be covered by the project

 

Objectives:

The research project seeks to better understand how gender intersects with other social identities to influence the use of migration as an adaptation strategy to climate change in Chaiyaphum, Thailand.

Empirical research comprises quantitative methods, in particular semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. During field research from August to September 2022, the assistant will work and live together with the researcher in rural villages Chaiyaphum province.

Tasks:

  • Support the collection of secondary data and documentation (mostly from Thai ministries and other relevant authorities) pertinent to the migration-gender-climate change nexus;
  • Translate relevant data and documentation from Thai to English;
  • Liaise with community members and facilitate their interactions with researcher;
  • Identify, contact and liaise with community members to set up interviews; focus group discussions and conversations; 
  • Act as interpreter during semi-structured interviews, focus groups discussions, casual conversations;
  • Transcribe interviews;
  • Provide logistical support to coordinate the fieldwork in Thailand;
  • Help build rapport with respondents and community members.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in research assistant/translation tasks in Thailand;
  • Excellent command of English (spoken, read and written), as well as of Thai;
  • Communications skills are essential (writing, in-person, moderating)
  • Prior experience in organising workshops, facilitating Focus Group Discussions and interviews at the community level;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion at all times;
  • Willingness to work and live in villages in rural parts of Chaiyaphum.
