  1. Background:

The World Wide Fund for Nature (formerly World Wildlife Fund (WWF)) aims to conserve nature and ecological processes by preserving biodiversity, ensuring sustainable use of natural resources and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful use of resources and energy. WWF works in more than 100 countries around the world. WWF has been working in Thailand since 1983 and WWF-Thailand was founded in 1995. WWF-Thailand implements a strategy that harnesses the strengths of the WWF network to focus on six major goals - freshwater, wildlife, oceans, climate & energy, forests, and food – and three key drivers of environmental problems - markets, finance and governance. In support of this strategy WWF-Thailand works with government, business, civil society and individuals to achieve our global goals for the benefit of the people of Thailand and the world. Following a strong track record of conservation delivery over the last 25 years, WWF-Thailand is seeking a Conservation professional with strong Management experience to oversee, develop, and implement high quality programs with tangible impact on conservation.

  1. Major Areas of Responsibility:

 

Program Development, Management and Resource Mobilization:

  • Manage, provide strategic direction, problem-solve projects implemented by WWF Thailand, by working closely with the Country Management Team (CMT), program managers and other functional units such as Finance, P&C, Safeguards as well as M&E.
  • Develop new programs of work that are aligned with WWF Thailand’s strategy and goals so as to contribute to WWF’s Global Conservation Goals, and in doing so, secure funding to support new projects and ideas.
  • Work closely with the WWF Network to secure the resources needed to implement the conservation program. Identify non-WWF funding sources and prepare proposals to secure funds for the conservation program, in particular public sector funding. Development of all proposals must meet mandatory cost recovery.
  • Actively engage with technical practices within the WWF Network in order to strengthen WWF Thailand’s visibility as well as to contribute to the conservation discussions at the Network level.
  • Ensure that adequate Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of each project is performed and that management objectives are modified accordingly.
  • Lead and support the roll out of the Network Quality Control measure and Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework (ESSF) for projects in landscapes that require this exercise. Work closely with ESSF Manager Thailand as well as Network’s ESSF Leads.
  •  Bridge the conservation goals together with other departments’ objectives (fundraising, communication, advocacy and campaign, etc.) in order to meet collective achievement of the WWF Thailand.

 

Management of WWF Thailand’s Conservation program:

  • Potentially, serve as a member of country management team (CMT) to provide fact-based opinions and solutions to organization-wide related issues. Identify risks and raise potential issues related to the overall organization.
  • Provide crisis management leadership when necessary especially when the situation relates to Conservation issues or during absence/unavailability of CEO.
  • Work with and support CMT decisions in order to build up organization’s unity and stability in accordance to the agreed strategic direction.  
  • Ensure risk and compliance within Conservation programs so that implementation is aligned with internal requirements and local regulations.
  • Uphold and ensure financial rules and regulations are respected within Conservation program including field offices. Ensure that project funds are managed in transparent and accountable manner and meets organization’s code of conduct and all social compliances.

 

Team and People Management:

  • Manage project managers to develop work plans and budgets to ensure the projects deliver the impacts according to the project goal and meet with donor’s requirements. 
  • Provide capacity building to project managers in order to develop their career path.  Identify talents to prepare future growth of the organization. Supervise project managers in building up their team capacity and their career development.
  • Provide an inspirational model of leadership to younger staff so as to build team spirit and pride in the organization.
  • Work with People and Culture in talent acquisition as part of organizational development.

 

External Relations and Advocacy:

  • Develop and maintain a network of contacts to build strategic alliances with the government, other NGOs, international organizations, donors, and other partners in order to promote and implement the conservation strategic plan.
  • Represent WWF Thailand in national, regional and international fora in order to increase the visibility of WWF Thailand. This includes national and regional media.

 

  1. Required Qualifications
  • At least a Master's degree in natural resource management, environmental studies, conservation biology, or in relevant fields.
  • A minimum of 7 years leading and managing complex conservation programs. At least three years should be in the Greater Mekong. Previous employment with WWF is an advantage.
  • A minimum of 3 years in managing programs funded by diversity of sources including governments, aid agencies, and private sector donors. Previous direct experience in managing large (USD 1 million and above) bilateral funded projects is highly desirable.
  • A minimum of 3 years working in cross cultural environments.
  • Knowledge of the principles of Conservation, Proposal Development and the Project Management cycle is required.
  • Inspirational leadership, strategic planning & decision making, influencing, network management and results-oriented.

 

 

  1. Working Relationships

Internal

  • CEO and CMT - Support the CEO and CMT by providing overall conservation direction, conservation team and donor management, and other specific information as needed.
  • Project Managers - Help the project managers develop work plans and budgets, implement projects, and complete M&E and reporting requirements.
  • Other departments - Coordinate with all departments, including P&C, Finance, Fundraising, and Communications to implement the conservation plan in alignment with relevant departments.
  • WWF GMPO - Coordinate with WWF GMPO and other country offices to achieve regional conservation objectives.
  • WWF International Offices - Ensure regular and consistent communication and collaboration between the WWF network and the WWF-Thailand office and secure technical and financial support from the WWF network to support the conservation program in Thailand.

 

External

  • Government agencies, other regulators, CSOs, other INGOs - Coordinate and build effective networking for conservation impact.
  • Where appropriate, advocate with government officials and policy makers for WWF Thailand’s conservation goals.
  • Represent WWF Thailand with corporates and the private sector in Thailand.
