Peace and Development Officer

The Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator is looking for a Peace and Development Officer. This is a national professional post in the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator. The UN Resident Coordinator is designated by the UN Secretary-General to lead development activities in the country, and to coordinate the work of the UN Country Team in support of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Office of the Resident Coordinator is supported by a small office comprising staff dealing with strategic policy management, data analysis, communications, partnerships, and economic affairs.

 

Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships:

The UN Resident Coordinator (RC) is the designated representative of the UN Secretary-General for development activities and the team leader of the UN Country Team (UNCT), which in Thailand is composed of 19 UN agencies, who have projects and programmes in Thailand. The Office of the UN Resident Coordinator (RCO) supports the RC in her coordination of the UNCT and liaison with national partners to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Thailand. The RCO is located within the main UN office in Bangkok.  

The joint UNDP-DPPA programme on building national capacities for prevention seeks to strengthen the analytical capacities of national stakeholders and the UN system to advance policy and programmatic coherence to support strategies for sustaining peace.

A National Peace and Development Officer (PDO) post is being established in Thailand, supported by the UNDP-DPPA programme, as in some other countries, to reinforce capacity of the RCO.
 

Responsibilities: The Peace and Development Officer will support the Peace and Development Advisor in the implementation of his/her activities by providing substantive support in 1) helping the UNCT to better understand political economy to advancing SDGs; 2) supporting the development of the  Common Country Analysis/UNSDCF; and 3) contributing to targeted initiatives to enhance national capacities on sustaining peace.  Under the direct supervision and guidance of the PDA, the PDO will provide substantive support, including as follows: -

  1. Engaging in evidence generation using big data to monitor new trends in relation to country dynamics.
  2. Conducting research on particular issues/thematic areas, as directed by the PDA, to inform the work of the UN Country Team,
  3. Supporting PDA engagement with national and local stakeholders, focusing particularly on engaging with civil society actors at local level and academia.
  4. Assisting in identifying areas of programmatic engagement with national stakeholders related to advancing SDG 16.
  5. Support UN coordination and high-level missions to the country.

 

Competencies:

  • Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education:  Advanced university degree (Master’s Degree) in political science, sociology, international relations, international economics, law, public administration, development studies or other related social sciences. In lieu of an Advanced degree, a Bachelor university degree with 2 additional years of experience.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in conflict analysis, development and/or conflict prevention in a governmental, multilateral or civil society organization;
  • Experience in analysis, research and sound drafting skills;
  • Big data analysis with deep understanding of social media tools;
  • Experience in project/programme development, management;
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in Thailand, and awareness and familiarity of key actors and stakeholders across the political, economic, human rights, and development spheres alongside knowledge of government, civil society, and other non-state actors.

 

Language:      Fluent Thai and English. Should have good writing skills in English
