Seeking a Research Assistant/ Associate to join an exciting project on platform workers in Bangkok

Just Economy and Labor Institute (JELI)

JELI is non-profit organization working to promote social justice and ensure the protection of labor rights in Southeast Asia. We support workers and labor organizations by offering educational and capacity-building programs. We also partner with rights-based organizations that share our vision and mission to conduct research and propose policy recommendations aimed at achieving economic and labor justice.

Project Description

Based on pioneer research we conducted on Thailand’s emerging platform economy in 2018, JELI is deepening its understanding of the future of work driven by the so-called online-to-offline (O2O) businesses. The platform economy is dramatically changing Bangkok’s urban landscape, Thai labor practices, as well as the roles of consumers in labor exploitation. To monitor these trends, we are launching a new study on platform-based work focusing on workers in O2O food delivery services. This project brings together labor activists, researchers and application developers to innovatively design and conduct qualitative research with an emphasis on worker’ voices and technology.

Position Description

This is a position with core responsibility of research coordination and implementation. It requires a commitment of 3-working-days per week for a period of 2 months. This position is also an invitation for a collaborator who may want to become more involved with JELI in the long term.

Working hours are flexible, with occasional evenings and weekends. Schedule can vary based on the stages of the project, but is strictly limited to 8 hours per day. Performance is judged on an output and outcome basis, rather than time spent on the assignment.

Duties include:

• Participate in the design of the research and lead the data collection process (i.e. coordinate with target companies and their workers, as well as arrange the interviews)
• Participate in the analysis of data gathered during research. Ensure the timeliness of data collection and achievement of research outcomes.
• Monitor the news and developments in the O2O food delivery sector and target companies during the period of research. Report updates to the supervisor of the research or director of JELI.

• Contribute to team efforts to fulfill the research goals such as initiating contacts with potential research participants.

Project period: mid-April to mid-June 2019

Payment: 18,000-22,000 THB per month, depending on experiences.

Skills and qualifications:

We are looking for a local collaborator who is primarily self-driven and passionate about social and labor justice.

This person must have:

• Basic knowledge of local labor issues and international labor standards and qualitative research skills.
• Excellent communication and writing skills. All interviews will be conducted in Thai, but English language skills are required for document reviews, as well as contribution to report writing.

Applicants with prior experience working with social justice/labor rights organizations; knowledge on platform-based employment and/or food delivery platforms are preferred. Women and minority applicants are encouraged to apply.
