Introduction

The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU: www.shoklo-unit.com; www.tropmedres.ac) currently has a laboratory position available for a suitably qualified and enthusiastic person.

 

SMRU is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust.  SMRU is based in Mae Sot where the main laboratories are based.  SMRU’s aims are to i) treat and care for patients with malaria, ii) undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment, and iii) to advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely. In addition to SMRU performs humanitarian and research work in other areas including Maternal Child Health, TB and other respiratory pathogens.  This post is to perform routine microbiology methods, such as bacterial culture and identification, and to support the implementation and running of molecular assays for a range of infectious diseases.  

 

Tasks

Responsibilities will include performing a range of microbiology tests, with a focus on implementing and performing molecular assays for both diagnostic and research purposes.  Techniques employed will include microbial culture, identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing; alongside nucleic acid extraction, conventional and real-time PCR, data analysis and result reporting.  The successful applicant will be responsible for all aspects of the assays used including stock control, quality control and SOPs. 

 

Essential Criteria

  • Bachelors’ degree or Masters’ degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology or related subject;
  • Familiarity with molecular biological techniques;
  • Good spoken and written English;
  • Good team player;
  • Ability to work within a multinational team.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of working in a research or clinical microbiology
