Job Title: Project Officer-Pangolin

Section (optional): ZSL Thailand

Department: East & Southeast Asia

Directorate: Conservation Programmes

Responsible to: Project Manager-Elephant and Pangolin Projects

Location based : Kanchanaburi

 

 

Key Purpose of the Job      

 

The key purpose of this Thailand based position is to coordinate and implement ongoing activities related to the ZSL Thailand Pangolin Projects. This will primarily consist of developing detailed plans activity implementation, supervising any assigned Project Assistants, liaison with partners at Department of National Parks (DNP) and other institutions, implementation of field activities , facilitating trainings, data management and analysis, developing reports, contributing to project development.

 

Responsibility for Resources People

The Project Officer will be responsible for the supervision of assigned Project Assistants and volunteers. During field work this person may be responsible for coordinating teams implanting field work.    

Other 

The Project Officer will have lead responsibility for management of equipment assigned to Pangolin Projects, including but not limited to camera traps, field equipment and vehicle assigned to the team.

  • Financial resources

 

This Project Officer will be responsible for preparing detailed budget plans for project activities. The Project Officer will be responsible for requesting cash advances for field activities, handling cash, and reconciling cash advances in accordance with ZSL procedures.

 

  • Confidently

In carrying out the duties of this post, the Project Officer may encounter confidential documents and be privy to sensitive information relating to donors, ZSL strategy, and project partners and therefore will be required to maintain confidentiality at all times.

                       

Main duties and key responsibilities         

         

  • Work with the Project Manager to coordinate the development of implementation plans for Pangolin Project Activities, particularly pangolin ecological and population surveys, community based surveys.
  • Act as lead liaison with the government of Thailand on all matters relating to Pangolin Projects such as planning of activities, acquiring permits, and reporting of results.
  • Works with Project Manager and other ZSL staff to conduct surveys in a scientific and professional manner.

                  

  • With the Project Manager to develop content for trainings conducted as part of the Pangolin Project, and lead delivery of that content at local trainings.

 

  • Manage Pangolin Project data in a systematic manner and assist with analysis of data.

 

  • Contribute to the development of reports for the Pangolin Project. These will primarily be reports developed for local government partners such as the NRCT and DNP.

 

  • Assist with the translation of project materials (e.g. reports and other communication materials) as needed.

 

  • When necessary, leads teams of people in the field and provide guidance and support achieve of project objectives.

 

  • With the Project Manager, sources, produce, catalogue and track equipment and supplies for project work, maintain inventories for all equipment and supplies.

 

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with ZSL staff, government staff and community partners.

 

  • Improve knowledge of and practice use of English language in the office and field environment.            

 

  • Attend training courses as assigned.

Building relationships

  • The Project Officer must be have intermediate level leadership skills. The applicant must be able to maintain to a good working relationships with all ZSL staff, particularly the Project Manager, Project Assistant and government staff.

 

Mental Demands    

  • The Project Officer must be able to make informed and logical decision that represent the best interest of elephant conservation and ZSL. The Project Officer must be able to adapt plans whilst still achieving project objectives.
  • The Project Officer must be able to resolve minor conflicts within the ZSL team and with government staff. An ability to discuss challenges and identify suitable solutions is critical.
  • Post holder must have outstanding attention to detail and be well organized.

         

Flexibility     

  • The Project Officer must maintain a high degree of flexibility and adaptability, and must also be willing to ‘crossover’ and assist on other projects as needed.

 

Working Conditions

  • This Project Officer is primarily office based but will require extensive work outdoors with direct exposure to the weather and other environmental variables.

Qualifications & Experience        

  • At least a BSc in a relevant area or equivalent experience.
  • At least 2 years experiences implementing wildlife conservation related projects in Thailand.
  • Experience working with the DNP and local communities to implement field activities.

 

Knowledge   

  • An advanced understanding of wildlife survey techniques, particularly survey design, and data analysis methodologies.
  • Knowledge of pangolin ecology.
  • An understating of the current challenges facing pangolin conservation in Thailand.

 

 

Skill & Abilities         

The Project Officer must be able to work/lead a field team to accomplish project objectives. The successful must also be able to work independently to plan activities, as well as manage data collected during activities.          

 

The Project Officer must also have:

  • Advanced skills in using MS office packages, specifically Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Intermediate skills using spatial tools such as QGIS and Google Earth.
  • An ability to manage competing priorities and delegate effectively is important.
  • Intermediate English language capability and a field craft skills including use of GPS for navigation and data collection and development of camera traps for wildlife surveys.

 

Other requirements

The Project Officer must have the ability to travel, have a current and valid driving license, be willing to work outside of normal office hours. (e.g. on weekends) and work in the field extended periods of times.
