DESCRIPTION

SEI is an independent international research institute, engaged in environment and development issues at local, national, regional and global policy levels for more than a quarter of a century. Our goal is to bring about change for sustainable development by bridging science and policy. We do this by providing integrated analysis that supports decision makers. SEI works from seven main locations, with additional offices linked to these. Project teams generally span locations. 

The overall responsibilities of the Research Associate are to undertake research activities and develop new research projects that focus on the centrality of human rights in climate change adaptation and natural resources management as well as development in general. We are looking for a Research Associate who can help us shape and provide the evidence base for an effective engagement of human rights in those areas. An individual with innovative and grounded thinking and research experience on human rights and the environment in Southeast Asia is preferred.

The Research Associate is reporting to the assigned Line Manager under overall supervision of the Centre Director.

 Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements research work on frameworks (including legal) for the protection of human rights and environment in the Asia-Pacific region at the national, regional, and international levels;
  • Engages multi-stakeholders (i.e. government stakeholders, civil society organizations, peoples' organizations, think tanks, universities, research institutes) to improve the policies and practices for the integration of human rights approaches into sustainable development in the region;
  • Assists in building and expanding strategic partnerships and networking with governments, civil society organizations, private sectors and donors in implementing policy research project activities and developing new research projects.
  • Identifies funding sources, leads or contributes to fundraising, and seeks to secure funding for projects or activities with policy engagement is key component. 
  • Prepares the documents related to research projects as agreed with the funders or respective project leaders as assigned (e.g. agenda, minutes, work plan, literature reviews, reports, policy briefs, publications, proposals)
  • Contribute to the development of the institute policies and cluster strategy.
  • In collaboration with the SEI Communications Team and the Centre Communications Coordinator, facilitates and supports internal communications and outreach activities including e.g. presentations, speeches, dialogues and media articles. 
  • Contributes to strengthening the relationship between Asia Centre with the host country (Thai government) and partnership with the host institute (Chulalongkorn University) and other agencies with in the region. 
  • Contributes to office management (e.g. staff meetings, administrative tasks, recruitment processes and etc.) and other duties as assigned by line managers. 

REQUIREMENTS

Required Minimum Qualifications and Required Experiences:

  • Master’s degree in natural resources management, social science, geography, law or other relevant fields with two years of relevant experience (work or internship);
  • Strong knowledge and understanding on human rights based approach, human rights accountability mechanisms and human rights law in Asia;
  • Extensive research experience working on human rights and environment issues;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with communities and marginal groups;
  • Strong motivation, personal initiative and commitment to excellence and results, as well as enthusiasm for supporting scientific research and policy engagement;
  • Demonstrated record of interdisciplinary collaboration, partnership and teamwork and a desire to work in a collaborative and multi-cultural environment;
  • Strong proposal writing skills;
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Excellent in reading, writing and speaking English

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working in the governmental or development sectors
  • Working knowledge in any language in Southeast Asia would be useful but knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia is preferred but not necessary 
  • Wide experience in the private sector
