Position title:               Sustainable Agricultural Specialist – for IKI Sustainable Consumption and Production Project (SCP)

Directly reports to:       Project Manager, IKI SCP, WWF Thailand

Location:                      Bangkok, WWF-Thailand

 

Background

Thailand is located within a global production and regional consumption hub for market commodities. The production of agricultural commodities has contributed to economic growth in Thailand, which has provided significant economic benefits and reduced poverty. But like many countries, Thailand is facing serious environmental challenges due to this rapid economic growth. This results in significant environmental impacts, such as land use change caused by expansion of agricultural commodities on reserved forests, burning field, poor farming management and lack of standard related environmental products leading to increased GHG emissions, water and air pollution and loss of biodiversity.

Developing sustainable low-carbon production and consumption practices for key agricultural commodities, selecting the maize supply chain to start off the project, is the principle goal of this project and will have major environmental benefits nationally, regionally and globally.

 

Objectives for this project include:

  1. Support the government to develop and implement Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) or other mitigation strategies for reducing GHG emissions in the agricultural/ food sector.

 

  1. Help private businesses develop and implement sustainable business practices that reduce GHG emissions in the agricultural/food sector.

 

  1. Inform and encourage consumers about the benefits of SCP to help develop market demand for sustainably produced, low-carbon products in the agricultural/ food sector.

 

  1. As the project is implemented in three Asian countries, there will be regional impacts and opportunities to share lessons learned with groups working on related issues.

 

Major Function

The Sustainable Agricultural Specialist will provide technical inputs relating to sustainable agriculture, and support the project team to implement the project. The responsibilities include overseeing the research and investigation operations, developing and providing information to advance the implementation of the project, assisting in capacity building and awareness building, and coordination with government agencies, academics, farmer groups and other project stakeholders.

 

Major Responsibilities

  • Work with the project team and other relevant units in WWF to deliver successful project outcomes.
  • Oversee the project’s operation relating to research and investigation, supply chain analysis, field surveys, development of information and data, agricultural practices, and coordination with project stakeholders.
  • Identify the problems within the supply chain of a selected agricultural commodity, and provide recommendations and suggestions for move the supply chain towards sustainability.
  • Assist in capacity building and awareness building campaigns on sustainable consumption and production, as well as to establish good relationships with project stakeholders.
  • Monitor contracted parties to ensure quality work and that the budget is spent in accordance with the plan.
  • Assist in producing of reports, information and data related to the project.
  • Attend WWF-Thailand/IKI project meetings, workshops, conferences, and symposia to present project activities and achievements.
  • Coordinate with WWF-Indonesia, WWF-Philippines, and WWF-Germany to exchange information about SCP best practices

Requirements

  1. Education and Qualification
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in agricultural, social sciences, natural resource management, forestry, or other relevant fields

 

  1. Knowledge
  • Agricultural development sector.
  • Sustainable consumption and production.
  • Agricultural commodity supply chains.
  • Sustainability standards and certification.
  • Knowledge on socio-economic and climate change related policies and strategies, and Thailand’s strategic and development plans.

 

  1. Experience

:At least three years of experience working in the field of agricultural or sustainable development.

  • Experience working with diverse social groups in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Experience working with environmental institutions or NGOs is an advantage.
