About Soi Dog Foundation: 

Soi Dog Foundation is the largest animal welfare organisation in Asia dedicated to helping stray dogs and cats. Soi Dog Foundation sterilises, vaccinates, administers medical treatment, shelters, promotes adoption of stray dogs and cats in Thailand, and runs education programmes on animal welfare. Soi Dog Foundation is also actively working to end South East Asia’s dog meat trade (DMT), and is expanding within South East Asia.

 JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title and Summary: The DMT Veterinary Coordinator will medically assess and prepare all DMT dogs going through the SDF shelter in Phuket to make sure all are fit to fly to partner rescues in the USA and Canada, in the shortest time possible. The DMT Veterinary Coordinator will instruct and oversee DMT nurse and their own assistant and will work closely with the International Partner Rescue Manager. He/ she will report to the Medical Director.

 Key Responsibilities: 

  • Performs full health checks for all new DMT dogs arriving at the SDF shelter.
  • Organises and facilitates movement of new DMT dogs arriving at the shelter.
  • Plans all necessary medical procedures for DMT dogs.
  • Makes sure all dogs are microchipped, vaccinated according to SDF intake schedule, wormed and protected against external parasites.
  • Makes sure all dogs are sterilised before departing from SDF shelter.
  • Makes sure all dogs have had dental scaling (with dental extractions and other dental surgery, where necessary) before departing from SDF shelter.
  • Makes sure all dogs are fit to fly as soon as possible, limiting the time dogs stay at SDF shelter (allowing new DMT dogs to be moved in).
  • Diagnoses and treats all DMT dogs, on rare occasions required to euthanise (only unhealthy dogs with very poor prognosis).
  • Provides leadership and supervision to animal carers working in the DMT enclosures, as well as own assistant and veterinary nurse.
  • Keeps all ASM records up-to-date and provides medical write-ups and updates to International Partner Rescue Manager on a weekly basis and when necessary.
  • Liaises with behaviour team to speed up socialisation of DMT dogs.
  • Performs fit to fly check (written) on all DMT dogs.

 Department and Supervisor: The DMT Veterinary Coordinator is a member of the Animal Welfare team, reporting to Medical Director.

Skills and Qualifications: 

  • This person should possess a degree in Veterinary Medicine and have at least 2 years’ working experience (clinical).
  • Good communication skills and proficiency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Work experience in an animal shelter or animal shelter facility will be an advantage.
  • Very well organized, diligent and have the ability to work with a diverse staff.
  • Ability to work under pressure and keep a positive attitude.

Location: This position based at the Soi Dog Foundation shelter, in Mai Khao, Phuket, Thailand.

Type of Employment: Full-time position.

  • Five-day work week, 8:00 am-17:00 pm. (May be required to work weekend or flexible time depending on their duties as directed by their Head of Department)
