Legal Adviser

 

 

Center for Asylum Protection (CAP) is looking for a passionate and qualified Legal Advisor. CAP provides free legal aid services to urban asylum seekers and refugees in Bangkok, Thailand. The Legal Advisor will assist asylum-seekers by advising clients in the Refugee Status Determination (RSD) process with UNHCR and completing other related tasks. This position reports to the Legal Advocacy Director.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

Primary Tasks:

  • Assist asylum-seekers in applications for refugee recognition with UNHCR in Bangkok, by:
    1. Assisting clients in preparing statements;
    2. Preparing briefs in support of applications;
    3. Conducting legal research related to refugees and on specific issues or themes;
    4. Conducting country of origin information research;
  • Conduct workshops and trainings for asylum-seekers;
  • Assist in CAP’s protection work;
  • Maintain and regularly update client records in accordance with CAP standards;
  • Coordinate with service providers and liaise with additional support contacts as necessary; and
  • Assist on refugee advocacy projects as needed.

Qualifications & Requirements

 

  • Law degree;
  • Demonstrated experience in refugee or immigration law; RSD experience preferred;
  • Excellent research and legal writing skills;
  • Experience conducting interviews, ideally experience working with interpreters;
  • Fluency in English;
  • Other language skills highly valuable;
  • Willingness to learn on the job and be a self-starter;
  • Flexibility and being a good team player;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills;

 

In addition, the Legal Adviser will need a warm and friendly manner, a commitment to advocating for vulnerable people, and a passion for refugee rights.

 

Compensation:                                                              

The Legal Adviser will receive a thorough induction and on-going support and training. The Legal Adviser will receive a competitive compensation package, including a monthly allowance, medical stipend, housing allowance, paid personal leave, initial airfare to Bangkok, and a visa and work permit.
