Freeland, a Bangkok-based counter trafficking organization working for a world that is free of wildlife trafficking and human slavery. Our team of law enforcement, development and communications specialists work alongside partners in Asia, Africa and the Americas to build capacity, raise awareness, strengthen networks and promote good governance to protect critical ecosystems and vulnerable people. We are currently looking to hire a full-time consultant Associate Legal Specialist.

The Associate Legal Specialist will support the Legal Specialist in strengthening capacity of the project management and stakeholders in analyzing political, government, and legislation trends of the target countries and the region.

Key Responsibilities:

The Associate Legal Specialist will provide research inputs in the preparation of regional and country specific interagency programming products such as assessments, reports, the mentoring sessions and workshops for the judiciary, prosecutors and parliaments.           

Such research shall include but not limited to:

  • An overview of the global, regional and target countries' situation of environmental crimes (with special emphasis on wildlife crime) and analysis through a review of the laws and policies, scholarly and grey literatures, and other sources ;
  • Legal review of the laws in the target countries (which may include comparative studies) with a view to provide recommendations on priotization and harmonization of laws and policy reforms on a regional and national level to combat wildlife crime;
  • Provide case studies and regional trends, enforcement actions and cases of wildlife crimes in the region;
  • Policy level and working level situation in the ASEAN system, including knowledge of developing and implementing regional and national wildlife laws;
  • Articles and updates on relevant law and policy subject matters;
  • Research on special projects as assigned by the Legal Specialist.

The Associate Legal Specialist will also support events coordination; facilitating dialogue/mission reports and documentation; draft speeches and guidance notes for dialogues and workshops; organize planning meetings with stakeholders and government counterparts.

The objective of this particular position will be to assist the Legal Specialist to provide the key deliverables within the timelines and with high quality research outputs.

Qualifications:

  • Recognized Bachelor or Masters degree in Law, International Affairs, Political Science or other relevant discipline.
  • The position is based in Bangkok, Thailand, the candidate must be fluent in written and spoken English, preferably biligual in another Asian language. Some work-related travel will be required. 
  • The candidate must be a team player and comfortable dealing with different nationalities and government agencies especially within the ASEAN region.  
  • Previous relevant experience is preferred although the candidates who are able to demonstrate the right attitude and motivation will be considered.
