 Peace Corps Back-up Medical Provider

 

The Peace Corps program in Thailand places American Volunteers in two-year assignments in villages and towns across the country.

 

Peace Corps seeks a Medical Doctor, Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to serve as a Back-up Medical Provider on an intermittent basis based in Bangkok.  The Back-up Medical Provider will deliver health care to U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers in Thailand and will work under the supervision of the Peace Corps Country Director and the Peace Corps Office of Medical Services in Washington DC.  This is an on-call position whereby the Back-up Medical Practitioner will cover for two primary Medical Officers during scheduled vacations and other absences including weekend coverage to allow the Medical Officers to rest.  Work will be primarily in Bangkok, but may require some travel to the provinces to attend to emergencies.

 

Salary: Negotiable up to $340/day depending on demonstrated salary history and qualifications.

 

Terms: Not to exceed 100 billable days/year whereby a day is defined as a 24-hour coverage period.  This position does not include benefits such as accrual of vacation days, sick days, or annual bonuses.

MAJOR DUTIES INCLUDE:

 

  • Deliver direct patient care to American volunteers on an on-call basis.
  • Provide referrals to outside medical consultants or facilities, i.e. hospital or emergency departments.
  • Assist with administrative duties and health education when indicated.
  • Be available around-the-clock by telephone, or be present in the Health Unit to provide care to Volunteers and liaise with specialists at external health facilities.
  • Provide consultative or prescriptive services to RN Medical Officers.
  • Respond to emergencies when called in the evenings or on weekends (per scheduled coverage period).

 

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Thai citizenship or current residency is
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written English and Thai.
  • Graduate of accredited school; MDs must be a graduate of a school listed in this link, Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research: http://www.faimer.org/resources/imed.html
  • Current license to practice.
  • Relevant clinical experience in primary care.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral /written English.
  • Experience in managing mental health issues including counseling of patients.
  • Experience in training design and presentation of health related material.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.
  • Program management, administrative experience.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of an intercultural team.
  • Hardworking, reliable and diligent with good inter-personal skills.
  • Must be able to obtain an American visa.
  • Willing to travel to sites in Thailand.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
