SEI Asia, a centre of Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) based in Bangkok, has a diverse team of multinational experts who integrate scientific research with participatory approaches to co-develop and share knowledge, build partnerships and influence policy for resilient development. SEI Asia’s work focuses on gender and social equity, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, water insecurity and integrated water resources management, transitional agriculture, renewable energy and urbanization.
SEI Asia is an affiliate of Chulalongkorn University (CU), Thailand. SEI and CU have an agreement to foster innovative scientific research combined with effective policy engagement on development and environmental challenges in Asia. The key areas of collaboration are intellectual engagement for joint research applications and fund mobilization, lectures and seminars for CU students, postgraduate supervision and examination, and CU–SEI employee links.
About the internship
The energy policy intern will support energy policy analysis and stakeholder engagement activities in Thailand, as required under the JETPACK project, specifically:
collecting policies based on provided criteria
analysing the policies under supervision
gaining hands-on experience in using a scientific AI tool to conduct research
participating in meetings with policymakers
synthesizing best practices for energy transition indicators.
This internship provides the candidate with hands-on experience in evidence-based policy research, exposure to high-level stakeholder engagement workshops and the opportunity to contribute to SEI’s mission of bridging science and policy.
Aims
This internship aims to support SEI in delivering the research outputs of the JETPACK project, while also providing learning opportunities for students, recent graduates and early-career researchers working at SEI.
Scope and approach
Support the SEI research team in carrying out a Thai energy policy assessment, identifying good practices and supporting stakeholder engagement activities.
Key tasks
Search for, collect and classify policies based on provided criteria.
Conduct a multi-criteria policy assessment based on SEI’s JET-18 framework (Just Energy Transition – 18 indicators).
Conduct desk research to identify global good practices for the key indicators in the framework.
Contribute to organizing and participating in stakeholder engagement activities, including meetings with policymakers and public events.
Contribute to producing the final policy brief.

Policy analysis of Thailand’s just energy transition performance.
A synthesis of good-practice policy recommendations for Thailand’s energy transition.

Supervision and support
The intern will work under the supervision of Huiling Zhu, Research Associate, with access to SEI’s internal resources, guidance on methodology and mentorship in policy-oriented research and stakeholder engagement.
Candidate profile
A graduate student or recent graduate with a background in energy-related topics, such as energy policy, renewable energy development, just energy transition, energy labour development, energy affordability, and gender and social inclusion in the energy transition.
An understanding of the energy policy landscape and/or energy transitions in Thailand and the wider Southeast Asian region.
Familiarity with energy policy databases(e.g.the IEA and Climate Policy databases) is preferred.
Proficiency in English is required.
Proficiency in Thai is an advantage.
