The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to:

i. Treat and care for patients with malaria.

ii. Undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment.

iii. To advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.

SMRU is based in Mae Sot where the main laboratories are based. The laboratories receive samples from several clinics along the Thailand-Myanmar border. The microbiology laboratory supports the clinical activities of SMRU as well as undertaking research in the follow areas: pneumococcal carriage and disease; infant pneumonia aetiology; causes of neonatal sepsis; assessment of diagnostic tests for infectious diseases.

Tasks/Responsibilities

- Conduct laboratory work in the fields of Malaria culture  in vitro drug susceptibility testing of fresh field isolates .

- Entry and analyse clinical biochemistry data.

- Develop and improve standard protocols for Malaria work.

- Train other laboratory staff in Malaria lab.

- Monitor routine laboratory work to ensure the standards of performance are maintained.

- Report on Malaria culture results and Biochemistry to other members of the laboratory and SMRU clinical staff.

- Perform other duties as directed by the Malaria lab supervisor.

 

Essential Criteria

- Degree in medical technology

- Fluency in Thai and English.

- Experience in a clinical or research laboratory.

- Ability to work as part of a team.

- Able to work under pressure

- Ready for any assignment required by the department

 

Desirable Criteria

- Track record of contributing to scientific publications.

- Ability to present results to colleagues.
