The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to:
i. Treat and care for patients with malaria.
ii. Undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment.
iii. To advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.
Since 2009, SMRU is engaged also in Tuberculosis program with activities on active and passive case findings, diagnosis and treatment of TB patients with updated protocol and best quality of care in full cooperation with national program and other stakeholders
Purpose of Post
The post holder will be dedicated to work on TB program, mainly on the TB clinics. He will be involved on all activities of the program. There may occasionally be a requirement to work at other clinics of SMRU as well.

Report to: TB Program Director
Tasks and Responsibilities
Patients care and management
- Provide medical care for difficult cases of TB, MDR-TB and TB/HIV patients.
- Make the decision for patient referral and coordinate for smooth transfer of patient.
- Ensure adherence to clinic hygiene and infection control procedures.
- Monitor regularly clinical work and patients care
Coordination
- Participate in the meetings (internal and external).
- Coordinate and collaborate with other partners (PU-AMI, Mae Tao clinic, Ko Ko hospital, Thai and Myanmar Government hospitals and other CBO)
- Contribute to advocacy events related to TB/MDR-TB and HIV program
Monitoring and program coordination
- Ensure proper recording and collecting and updating data of TB, HIV and PMTCT program.
- Production of reports ( monthly, quarterly, semester and annual) regularly
- Contribution of proposal writing and budgeting for the program
Staff Management
- Coach and supervise medics, nurses, counselors and home visitors in their respective service provision on day to day basic provision.
Essential Criteria
- Certificate of medical doctor
- 2 years minimum medical experience
- Fluent in English and Burmese
- The ability to motivate and lead a team
- Commitment and honest
- Good relationship
- Empathy and nice to patients and colleague
- Respect the team members, patients and other colleague
- Accurate and puncture
- Good communication skills
- Interest in clinical research
- Good mathematic skills (for calculation of drug doses and fluids for children)
- Good attention to detail and accuracy
- Motivated and able to work under pressure
- Ready for any assignment required by the unit
- Experience in clinical research
