The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to:
i. Treat and care for patients with malaria.
ii. Undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment.
iii. To advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.
Purpose of Post
The purpose of this post is to support the Microbiology Laboratory Manager in the daily running of the malaria molecular team. This will involve taking responsibility for the daily activities of the team including organisation of work and supervision of staff. The post holder will be expected to report regularly to the Microbiology Laboratory Manager. In addition it will be essential for the post holder perform practical laboratory work, data analysis and document management activities.
Tasks/Responsibilities
- Responsible for daily supervision of malaria molecular team staff.
- Perform practical work including processing survey samples, nucleic acid extraction and PCR.
- Maintain records, including filling out and signing forms/worksheets.
- Analyse and organise data.
- Create and review standard operating procedures.
- Review activities of the laboratory including quality control/assurance procedures.
- Report to the Microbiology Laboratory Manager.
- Follow the rules of the laboratory including health and safety rules and ensure all other staff do the same.
- Gain a full understanding of the procedures performed and the theory behind them.
- Train other members of staff.
- Participate in departmental tutorials.
- Attend laboratory management meetings.
Essential Criteria for the post-holder
- Masters’ degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology or related subject.
- Experience of working in a research or clinical laboratory.
- Good spoken and written English.
- Good team player.
- Organisational skills.
- Microsoft office skills including Excel.
- Ability to work within a multinational team.
- Ability to work flexible hours including some weekends.
Desirable Criteria for the post-holder
- PhD in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology or related subject.
- Experience of managing staff.
- Experience with quality management procedures.
