Based in Bangkok, SEI Asia has a diverse team of multinational experts who integrate scientific research with participatory approaches to co-develop and share knowledge, build partnerships, and influence policy for resilient development. SEI Asia’s work focuses on gender and social equity, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, water insecurity and integrated water resources management, transitional agriculture, renewable energy and urbanization. 

SEI Asia is an affiliate of Chulalongkorn University (CU), Thailand. SEI and CU have an agreement to foster innovative scientific research combined with effective policy engagement on development and environmental challenges in Asia. The key areas of collaboration are intellectual engagement for joint research applications and fund mobilization, lectures and seminars for CU students, post-graduate supervision and examination, and CU–SEI employee links. 

The role

The Inclusive Climate Finance for Vulnerable Communities in Asia-Pacific (ICCAP) project, funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), aims to improve and scale up inclusive public and private climate adaptation finance flows to vulnerable groups and communities in the Asia-Pacific region. The project is led by Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and implementing partners Appui au Développement Autonome (ADA) and the Asia-Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (APRACA).

It targets six countries, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, Laos and Nepal, whose populations are highly vulnerable to climate impacts. The project uses a stakeholder-centred approach to co-develop and consolidate a pipeline of inclusive finance adaptation solutions from international, regional and national investors to vulnerable communities. 

We seek a motivated, creative individual to join our team and support the Inclusive Climate Finance for Vulnerable Communities in Asia-Pacific (ICCAP) project under Work Package 1 (WP1): Policy Analysis, Cooperation & Engagement.

This work package will deliver several key activities, most notably:

  • Analysis of current climate finance policy and regulatory frameworks in target countries
  • Collection of best practice examples of effective climate finance policies
  • Knowledge product on green taxonomies
  • Stakeholder map, including an institutional analysis of the climate finance ecosystem in target countries
  • A variety of outreach and engagement activities (workshops, meetings, roundtables) targeting policymakers and civil servants

Key duties and responsibilities:

As an intern with the ICCAP project under WP1, you are expected to contribute to and support:

  • Collection of climate finance policies and regulatory documents
  • Analysis of these policies under the guidance of more senior personnel
  • Mapping of stakeholders and institutional set ups within countries relevant to climate finance flows and policies
  • Analysis and summary of academic and non-academic sources on climate finance, climate finance policymaking and climate finance best practices
  • Logistical organization of meetings, workshops and roundtables
  • Liaison with project partners and external stakeholders, some of whom are high-level decision-makers
  • Other research tasks as appropriate, under the guidance of your line manager

Who you are

We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive person with a passion for research and engagement in the fields of climate change adaptation, inclusive climate finance and sustainable development. Ideally, you have some initial experience in policy analysis and a good understanding of the challenges in climate finance and climate finance policymaking.

Required qualifications and competencies  

  • Ongoing or recently completed master’s degree in a relevant subject (e.g development studies, climate change, economics, sociology, international relations, political economy, other related social sciences or similar)
  • Knowledge of climate change adaptation, climate finance, and sustainable development
  • Good analytical skills
  • Ability to synthesize data and information without compromising quality
  • Excellent fluency in English, with strong writing and presentation skills

Desirable competencies

  • Experience or familiarity with climate adaptation contexts within one or more of the 6 ICCAP target countries
  • Knowledge of mixed-methods research methodologies
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, evidence synthesis and stakeholder mapping
  • Prior employment or internship experience in a relevant professional setting

Required personal skills

  • Enthusiastic and passionate about “research to policy” pathways
  • Able to work both independently and with supervision
  • Commitment to continuous learning and intellectual curiosity
  • Comfortable working with project partners in diverse cultural and disciplinary contexts
  • Commitment to sustainable development
