Based in Bangkok, SEI Asia has a diverse team of multinational experts who integrate scientific research with participatory approaches to co-develop and share knowledge, build partnerships, and influence policy for resilient development. SEI Asia’s work focuses on gender and social equity, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, water insecurity and integrated water resources management, transitional agriculture, renewable energy and urbanization.

SEI Asia is an affiliate of Chulalongkorn University (CU), Thailand. SEI and CU have an agreement to foster innovative scientific research combined with effective policy engagement on development and environmental challenges in Asia. The key areas of collaboration are intellectual engagement for joint research applications and fund mobilization, lectures and seminars for CU students, post-graduate supervision and examination, and CU–SEI employee links.

The role

Under the direct supervision of the Communications Manager (Asia) and guided by the Head of Communications, the communications intern will support the SEI Asia Centre communications team in implementing the regional communications work plan. The role primarily focuses on content development and digital engagement, including website management, social media management and analytics.

Key responsibilities

  • Actively participate in managing SEI Asia’s social media platforms to enhance digital presence and audience engagement.
  • Collaborate on the digital communications strategy for key initiatives, including a prominent climate forum, to develop strategic communication planning and execution skills.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining SEI Asia’s content calendars and social media scheduling tools to ensure a cohesive and dynamic online presence.
  • Monitor and analyse SEI Asia’s digital performance metrics to build analytical skills for assessing communication impact.
  • Under mentorship from the Communications Manager, help create and refine digital content such as infographics, videos and photo posts, enhancing both creative and technical skills.
  • Provide comprehensive communications support as needed in SEI Asia’s dynamic work environment.

  • Experience collaborating within a multicultural environment, enhancing interpersonal communication and appreciation for diverse perspectives.
  • Hands-on experience with digital content creation and optimization using analytics for data-driven decision-making.
  • Expanded knowledge of sustainability and environmental principles, enabling meaningful contributions to related initiatives.

This program aims to impart practical skills, knowledge and a strong sense of environmental stewardship and global awareness, preparing participants for successful future careers.

Who you are

We are looking for a passionate, eager learner who thrives in diverse team settings.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Academic background: new graduates (within one year), current final-year academic undergraduate students or postgraduate students (e.g. master’s or higher) in mass communications, graphic design, visual communications, media studies or related disciplines.
  • Language proficiency: excellent written and verbal English communication skills. Proficiency in one or more Mekong region languages (e.g. Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Burmese) is highly advantageous.
  • Multimedia communication: working knowledge of multimedia principles, particularly graphic design and video editing, essential for creating compelling content.
  • Social media and digital engagement: solid understanding of social media engagement strategies is required. Experience with digital data analytics is highly desirable.
  • Creativity and innovation: demonstrate ability to think creatively and innovatively, developing engaging communication strategies.
  • Cultural sensitivity and teamwork: proven ability to work effectively with diverse teams, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and adaptability. 

Additional information

  • SEI Asia provides a stipend allowance for the intern.
  • Costs related to initial visa application, relocation and accommodation are to be covered by the intern.
  • SEI Asia will support visa and work permit applications if applicable.
  • Interns are responsible for their own health, accident and life insurance during their stay in Thailand.
