Position: Food Business Manager Asia
Job Type: Full-time consultancy basis till March 31, 2025
Department: Food Business Location: Home-based ideally in Thailand (or Japan)
About Us:
Compassion in World Farming International was founded in 1967 in England by Peter Roberts, a British farmer who became concerned by the development of intensive factory farming. Over 50 years ago, Peter decided to make a difference and take a stand against this farming system. In his lifetime, Peter saw the demise of barren battery cages, veal crates and gestation crates in the UK, and in Europe achieved recognition that animals are sentient beings.
Compassion in World Farming is the leading international farm animal welfare charity, campaigning to improve the lives of millions of farm animals through advocacy, lobbying for legislative change, and positive engagement with the global food industry. Our established international Food Business programme aims to drive transformational change for animal welfare enabled by a reduction in the reliance on animals sourced foods and a shift towards regenerative farming. The Food Business team operates in Europe, the US, China and APAC/LATAM, and more globally through the supply chains of our corporate partners.
The Challenge:
The global food industry is increasingly committing to cage-free systems for laying hens and eliminating sow stalls for pigs, driven by recognition of the importance of animal welfare and consumer demand for ethical food production. However, progress varies globally, with notable challenges in Asia.
The prevalence of barren battery cages for laying hens and stalls and farrowing crates for sows in Japan and Thailand is widespread at over 90%.
Caged systems severely restrict the natural behaviours of hens and sows, causing physical and psychological distress. Hens in cages are deprived of activities such as nesting, perching and dustbathing. Sows in stalls and crates are unable to walk or turn around and experience frustration, abnormal behaviour, and limited interaction with their piglets. Caged production is often associated with barren environments, routine mutilations such as beak trimming and tail docking, high antibiotic use, and with a focus on high production at the expense of animal welfare, underscoring the need for systemic change in animal farming practices.
The Solution:
As a consultant, working and representing Compassion in World Farming International in the role of Food Business Manager Asia, you will play a pivotal role in influencing and partnering with leading food businesses across Asia, with a strategic focus on Thailand and Japan.
This consultant and opportunity will be a catalyst for change, driving the adoption of compassionate and sustainable practices across the food industry in Asia.
What will you do as our Food Business Manager (Asia)?
The purpose of this opportunity is to influence global companies operating in Asia, particularly with a focus on Thailand and Japan, and leading national food businesses to improve animal welfare standards throughout their supply chain. Our priority is to end the use of caged systems for farm animals, in particular laying hens and pigs, raise the welfare of meat chickens, and support the move to sustainable and regenerative farming practices. Responsibilities for this opportunity are to develop and manage a diverse corporate engagement portfolio and using the power of positive persuasion, as well as Food Business tools and resources, secure cage-free commitments and awards, ensure compliance and facilitate implementation of higher welfare policies and practices.
As part of this multifaceted role, you will play a pivotal role in benchmarking and reporting, obtaining commitments from companies to help enhance transparency and accountability. Moreover, you will play a vital role in crafting compelling case studies and communication materials, to highlight best practices and promote our mission globally.
The selection process will involve an application/proposal deadline, and we will communicate the anticipated date for consultant selection at a later stage. Help us create a more compassionate and sustainable food system. For any questions, please contact the Recruitment/HR teams.
