Futuremakers Project's Outstanding Case Stories and Communities' Products
1. Introduction
Plan International is an international non-governmental organization with a vision to see every child in the world thriving in a dignified society. We collaborate with families, communities, and governments, and other partner organizations to ensure that all children have the right to survival, protection, development, and participation. In 2022, Plan International Thailand initiated the "Building a local eco-tourism network of community-based enterprises for Thailand’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery" project, also known as Futuremakers. This ambitious initiative, generously supported by the Standard Chartered Foundation, aims to equip young people from diverse ethnic groups, including the Lahu, Akha, Dara-ang, Kachin, and Karen, with the entrepreneurial skills and network needed to build a better future for themselves and their communities.
Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the project empowers young people from diverse ethnic groups, like the Lahu, Akha, Dara-ang, Kachin, and Karen, to become the architects of their own economic future. There are 20 ethnic communities actively participate in this project. This blossoming network of community-based enterprises thrives on a rich diversity of products and services: such as homestay, camping, natural attraction tours, and community products; weaving, embroidered fabrics, dried fruits, dried fish, chili paste, herbal products, etc.
The impact of Futuremakers extends far beyond individual businesses. By promoting sustainable tourism practices and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of these ethnic groups, the project attracts responsible travelers and injects much-needed resources into local economies. Futuremakers is a testament to the transformative power of youth empowerment. It's a story of resilience, cultural pride, and a deep-rooted connection to the land. By supporting this initiative, we invest in not just individual businesses, but in the future of these communities and the rich cultural tapestry they represent.
