Position Title : Head of Communications
Department : Communications
Work location : Bangkok, Thailand
Reports to : CEO
Technically report to : N/A
Supervises : Communications Officer(s)
Employment duration : 12-month with possibility for extension

1. Background

According to the five-year strategic plan, WWF Thailand aims to build its brand in Thailand in order to strategically position itself in conservation and environmental protection. The goal of Communications is to support the conservation programs with appropriate and relevant content and dissemination, to enhance fundraising by strong corporate marketing, merchandising and developing major donor relations. The Head of Communications will be leading the implementation of this goal. He/She will be responsible for the development of all strategic plans of WWF Thailand communications, oversee campaigns, events, external activities, and publications, and manage all social media. He/She will play a leadership role in WWF Thailand both externally and internally. The ideal candidate is a professional Communications, Media, Branding, or Marketing leader with a passion for conservation and environmental protection who can work independently and skilled in managing a team.

 

 2. Major Duties and Responsibilities

 Team Management and Administration:

  • Develop and nurture a new Communications team in close collaboration with the Senior Management Team with an aim to grow the team;
  • Create a Communications strategy for WWF Thailand that supports the conservation objectives under the new 5 year Country Strategy;
  • Provide management direction to the Communications team to meet annual objectives and organizational goals;
  • Coaching and mentoring of junior communications staff or relevant staff as assigned by the organization;
  • Oversee and advise on communications outputs such as campaigns, events and publications of project teams so that these are aligned with the global branding and brand guidelines;
  • Oversee WWF Thailand social media and website as well as other communications channels that may be used by other Units such as LinkedIn;
  • Manage the budget and the financial aspects of communications projects, as well as provide required financial reports;
  • Provide reports as requested by other teams such as M&E, Risk and Compliance, and Finance;
  • Manage and oversee consultants and subcontractors working for the Communications Unit;

 

Brand Management and Marketing in Thai markets and within WWF Network:

  • Oversee, manage and monitor all aspects of logo usage according to global branding guideline;
  • Create and develop new ideas for branding WWF to the Thai public and Thai corporations for fundraising and to improve brand awareness;
  • Manage social media presence and increase WWF presence in Thailand;
  • Within WWF Network, increase WWF presence among the donor offices through internal newsletters, news announcements, etc.
  • Within WWF Network, create communication materials for donor offices which donate funding to our projects so that more funds are allocated to WWF Thailand;
  • Work closely with these donor offices of WWF Network to enhance our image and reputation;

 

Internal Communications within WWF Thailand:

  • Support the SMT with timely and relevant communications to build better collaboration and understanding of our work for all staff;
  • Support the CEO to draft emails or messages to staff as requested to enhance internal communications especially on organization-wide issues;
  • Regularly update CEO on communications strategy implementation and progress of the work-streams;
  • On a timely basis, update Conservation Director and Project Managers on assigned work-streams;
  • Provide advice on marketing messaging and pitches to support Fundraising team;
  • Share relevant content from WWF Thailand with the broader WWF Network in order to enhance the organization’s visibility.

 

External and Crisis Communications:

  • Act as focal person in all External Communications aspects for WWF Thailand;
  • Act as risk identifier for any Communications and Brand/Reputational risk, and provide risk mitigation strategies;
  • Serve as the focal point and key contact person for local and international media in the event of a crisis, or in an emergency as assigned by the organization;
  • Provide strategic advice on managing crisis communications to SMT and support the SMT to manage the situation in an effective and timely manner;
  • For external communication, provide content to public through proper media channels or through contacts with journalists and reporters; and ensure that external service providers fulfill their contractual obligations.

 

Contribution to the Senior Management Team (SMT):

  • The Country Communications Manager is a senior member of WWF Thailand and serves as a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT). This requires that the Country Communications Manager participates actively in every SMT meeting, which is held every two weeks (bi-weekly).
  • Adhering to the strictest degree of professionalism with regards to accessing sensitive, confidential and controversial information/data;

 

Collaboration with WWF Foundation:

  • Support WWF Foundation with fundraising opportunities, enhanced branding and marketing channels, and other tactics;
  • Jointly organize fundraising events with the Foundation;

 

Collaboration with WWF Asia Pacific and WWF International:

  • Work with various teams at WWF Asia Pacific, WWF International and other WWF country offices on joint communications initiatives such as global campaigns (i.e. Earth Hour), advocacy topics on social media, etc.
  • Occasionally, represent WWF Thailand in online and physical meetings for WWF Thailand on Communications related issues. Occasional travel locally and internationally is required.

 

 3. Required Qualifications       

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, media, journalism, or in relevant fields; Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred;
  • 15 years working experience in communications either private sector or INGOs ;
  • 7 years in middle management level;
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills required;
  • Strong professional writing skills. Writing samples will be requested;
  • People and team management experience required;
  • Conservation or environment background would be advantage;
  • Public Policy and Advocacy experience is desirable.
