GMS Coordinator
Background
MORU is a collaboration between Mahidol University (Thailand), Oxford University (UK) and the UK's Wellcome Trust. For over 40 years, MORU has conducted targeted clinical trials and public health research that aim to discover and develop appropriate, affordable interventions that measurably improve the health of people living in resource-limited parts of the world.
The MORU Malaria Genomics group leads GenRe-Mekong (“Genetic Reconnaissance of Malaria in the Malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion”), a regional genetic surveillance project that collaborates with national malaria control programmes (NMCPs) to collect small blood samples from malaria patients, and conduct extensive genetic analyses, providing public health decision-makers with information on the extent and spread of resistance to antimalarials in the geographical region covered. Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, GenRe-Mekong has already processed samples from over 12,000 patients, and routinely conducts surveillance in several GMS countries. MORU also leads GMS2 (“Genetic Surveillance of Malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion”), a data analysis and capacity building consortium which brings together NMCPs and scientific partners in five countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).
