Software Developer (R Shiny)

(4-month contract with opportunity to extend)

About the GenRe-Mekong project

GenRe-Mekong is a scientific project that supports malaria elimination efforts in the Greater Mekong Subregion. We provide national public health authorities with epidemiological data, such as information on the extent and spread of antimalarial drug resistance in their countries.

The project collected small blood samples from malaria patients, from which the malaria parasite DNA is sequenced. The resulting data are used to conduct extensive genetic analyses. The results of these analyses are then reported to public health decisionmakers. To date, samples have been collected from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and India. Job Description - R Shiny Web Application Development

The GenRe-Mekong project aims to enable public health decisionmakers to independently analyse and interpret their locally collected genetic data. To make this possible, we have developed an R package to analyse the genetic data and produce a wide range of outputs, such as maps of genetic mutations and antimalarial drug resistance prevalence.

We want to make this tool more accessible, by creating a web-based interactive dashboard that interfaces to the R package library and the GenRe-Mekong datasets. We are seeking a software developer with specific, and demonstrable, expertise in R Shiny web development to transform this R package into a web-based application. This 4-month contract work will cover the design and initial deployment of the web-based tool, with opportunities to extend the contract for further development and maintenance of the tool.

Principal Responsibilities

Design, deploy and maintain a web-based application for visualization of GenRe-Mekong data

Work with the GenRe-Mekong team to understand data needs, and translate those into application requirements and design.

Implement intuitive user interfaces suitable for nontechnical users

Propose cloud-based solutions for hosting the application and data

Create a suitable development environment, and setup a testing and issue management system that can be easily maintained in the long term

Required Qualifications

Demonstrable experience with web application development using R Shiny. Examples of your previous work should be showcased.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with cloud-based implementation preferred

Commitment to thoughtful UI/UX design

Previous work with geographical data is an advantage
