Introduction

The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU) supported by the Wellcome Trust, UK. The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalised populations living on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border in the Mae Sot area, Tak province. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.

 

SMRU is based in Mae Sot where the main laboratories are based and received samples from sites along the Thai-Myanmar border.

 

Job title:             IEC and Media Officer

Location:             Mae Sot

Status:                Full time

Probation:          SMRU can terminate employment at 3 months if performance inadequate

Report to:           Head of PE Department

Staff under supervision: Department of Public Engagement (PE)

 

Job overview

IEC and Media Officer is expected to work under Department of Public Engagement (PE) to support team in producing Information Education and Communication (IECs) materials to communicate with target audiences and populations in SMRU serving area along Thai-Myanmar border. The IEC and Media Officer is also expected to produce infographic, taking photos of events or occurrences relevance for public health engagement purposes focusing on topics health to raise awareness, promote self-caring, self-prevention and guide serving populations to proper treatment. Under supervision of head of department and senior member, position holder will work closely with member of PE department to simplify and contextualize IECs materials as well as visually understandable to population with diverse educational background. To also attend meetings, workshops and engagement session to gain understanding of what tool to produce, as well as to patriciate in sessions where these tools are used in order to gain insight on how to improve and appropriate IECs materials according to need, and being creative and innovative.

 

 

 

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Working under the supervision of head of department and senior member
  • Produce IECs materials on health topics which are of interest of SMRU
  • Develop and design IECs materials
  • Communicate well with other staff members
  • Work together with PE team to plan for testing session of IECs materials
  • Produce infographic for IECs, as well as accompany team to support with photo taking to record event conducted in different sites and communities
  • Work with SMRU purchase team for printing process and compliance with SMRU grant, finance and purchase SOPs
  • Keep record of IECs materials produced and keeping track of medial electronic files
  • When needed, perform ICEs material updating
  • Keeping inventory of IECs materials and distribution to support team with annual report
  • Oversee social media to communicate with audience online

Essential criteria

  • A degree in media and communication or related subjects or sufficient vocational training in one of these disciplines.
  • Good spoken and written both Thai and English, ability in Karen and Burmese is a plus.
  • Fair understanding of border context and health situations. 
  • The ability to work in team and independently.
  • The ability to work flexible hours including weekends.
  • The ability to work under pressure.
  • The ability to present results to colleagues.
  • Experience and fluency in use of software required for producing media.
  • Willingness to live in Mae Sot.
  • Willingness to follow and adjust to needs and able to follow through instructions.

 

Desirable criteria

  • A track record of contributing to media productions
  • Experience in media production
  • Creativity and innovative skills
