The Institute for Transformative Learning of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB Institute) is seeking volunteer tutors for our School of English for Engaged Social Service 2021 program. Tutors will assist the primary teachers in the classroom and lead small group and one-on-one conversations outside of class. You would like to learn about Thailand, Buddhism and other world religious traditions, meditation, social issues, and transformative teaching methods.
You want to practice teaching and leading others.
You are ready for a life change.
You are good at providing wholehearted and authentic support for others, in this case including the students, the leaders of the program, and the other members of the work team. You can also expect to receive such support in return.
Teach a small group on every regular classroom day (from 4:00-5:00pm). We will help guide you in your teaching and leadership of the small group. Preparation time is sometimes needed, but will not be extensive.
Participate in all or nearly all aspects of the training, bearing in mind one's role as a resource and support person.
Act as a resource to the students on an individual basis.
Support the primary teachers in helping to see that the field trips and workshops go well.
Attend the full-cohort classes and participate in a work team meeting after each morning class.
The Following Qualities and Skills are Also Desirable:
Ability to engage in honest self-inquiry as well as to genuinely offer and receive support within the context of a community of learners.
Energetic and in good health, prepared for the demands of a rather intensive course.
Ability to communicate effectively across cultures and act in a respectful manner towards all participants.
Ability to follow directions provided by primary teachers and be able to facilitate small group learning independently.
Some experience and understanding of contemporary NGO and activist worlds would be beneficial but not essential.
Periods of Work Expected: May 2—July 22, 2021
The School of English for Engaged Social Service 2021 program will run from May 2 – July 22, 2021. The first two weeks of the course will be online at alight to moderate intensity due to quarantine requirements for those coming from outside of Thailand. The most helpful and effective scenario is when tutors are able to commit to volunteering for the entire duration of the course. It would be desirable if tutors who are available earlier than the start date would be able to help prepare for the program a few days in advance. Similarly, when possible, tutors' participation in the program evaluation in the days immediately following the graduation ceremony is of great help. Inability to come for the full length of the program will likely give your application a somewhat lower priority, but depending on circumstances and your qualifications, you might be able to come for a determined and agreed upon length of time that is less than the full 12-week duration of the school.
This is a residential course, which means that the tutors must be able to live on site (one and a half hours from Bangkok) and travel on field trips with the group. Most but not all weekends are free; at the same time, the ability to be available for voluntary group activities and community building on occasional weekends would be appreciated.
Benefits and Compensation:
In appreciation for your time and effort as a tutor, you will receive free room and board, and free travel on group excursions. We would also assist with visa procedures in Thailand if necessary. INEB Institute will also cover the costs of group medical and accident insurance for the duration of the course.
Many tutors have benefited as much or more from the course as the students, because they are attending class sessions, and participating in the workshops and fieldtrips as well as extracurricular activities. So that is something additional that you would gain from the position.

The INEB Institute’s three-month School of English for Engaged Social Service program aims to develop the qualities necessary for compassionate leadership at a time of growing crisis and uncertainty. For leadership to be compassionate and clear-minded, we believe it must be grounded in a strong sense of connection with oneself, with the earth, with immediate others, and with local, regional, and international communities. The ability to think freely and develop confidence in one’s views and capacities are also essential. These qualities can be developed through training and the adoption of carefully selected personal disciplines and practices. The kind of student we ideally seek to reach is a young adult from Asia who has already shown some commitment to work for the common good through practices of personal and social transformation. Such commitments and practices have been at the core of INEB’s identity as an international network since its inception.
Working with a small group, we aim for depth of learning and experience in a number of areas. The most significant of these are:
Self-awareness, self-confidence, and full access to one’s own learning potential.
Awareness and sensitivity to others, and the skills and motivations needed for mutual support and cooperation.
Skills of understanding, speaking, reading, and writing English.
Self-directed, freely chosen, and mindful leadership.
Interpretive, critical thinking, and social analytical skills.
Awareness of global crises—climate change, social inequality, violence, and lack of voice—and their local manifestations, as well as the many signs of hope that are now emerging around the world.
Awareness of the personal dimensions of efforts towards social change.
These areas are overlapping, and each has a subset of further skills or capacities that enable them. For example, the skills of awareness and sensitivity to others, mutual support, and cooperation, require a subset of skills that includes the ability to verbally appreciate others, the ability to listen with attention and respect as well as to keep confidentiality, the willingness to inquire into and accept cultural, ideological, and personal differences in an atmosphere of respect, and the willingness to trust and to share one’s personal thoughts and feelings in appropriate settings.
To accomplish these goals, the program uses a complex orchestration of:
Regular and sequentially organized classroom work in English and other areas.
Workshops by national and international level trainers in a number of areas (e.g. Power Analysis, Non-Violent Communication, Peer Counseling, and so on).
Field trips to observe and interact with intellectuals and community leaders in Thailand as examples of leadership, creativity, and social service.
Personal and small group tutoring.
Time for reading, writing, and communal watching of films.
Collective work to maintain the classroom and other areas.
