Assignment Remark: This assignment is part of the Talent Programme for Young Professionals with Disabilities. The programme seeks to: 1) enhance the employability and career prospects of young professionals with disabilities through work experience with UNDP offices; and 2) build a talent pipeline of qualified professionals with disabilities who can contribute to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at national and global levels.
Accessibility: UNDP Thailand Country Office is based on 12th Floor of the Secretariat Building of UN ESCAP. The building houses about 15 UN Agencies with the accessibility of mobility disabilities. Staff and visitors, who have mobility disabilities, can access the building without any issue. Moreover, persons with diverse special needs, whether visual physical, brain lesions, hearing or speech impairments, also have access to a set of assistive devices, which are available upon request, in a designated area at the Accessibility Centre, at the United Nations Conference Centre, which is located in the same compound and connected to the Secretariat Building.

With innovation deeply embedded in our development approach, in partnership with government and nongovernment entities, our work span primarily in the areas of biodiversity, climate change (mitigation and adaptation), peacebuilding and social cohesion, advancing anti-corruption efforts, improving efficiency in government spending, reducing marginalization and exclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people and sustainable livelihoods. In all activities, we encourage the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women and girls, minority groups, and most vulnerable communities.
Description of tasks:
Under the overall guidance of the UNDP Resident Representative and direct matrix supervision of the Team Leaders for a) Democratic Governance and Social Advocacy and b) Climate Change and Environment, the Programme Associate will provide support to the policy advocacy work, programmes and projects being implemented as well as UNDP’s communication work to ensure that awareness on the SDGs are raised and UNDP interventions are aligned to the achievement of the SDGs, in particular with a leave no one behind lens. Specifically, on support towards Programme design and implementation, the Programme Associate will be a member of the CO Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Committee and support related research efforts and expected to work closely with the team and partners on the following key initiatives:
- Explore opportunities to scale up a pilot initiative UNDP implemented to address gender inequality within the context of Future of Work, in particular to improve the digital literacy of women living with disability in order to improve their employability and be economically self-sufficient in the context of future of work.
- Building the Resilience of Persons with Disabilities to Cope with Climate Change in Thailand which is part of a regional programme. The overall objective of the project is to build the capacity of Thailand to more effectively take actions in improving the resilience of persons with disabilities to climate change and climate related disasters. The project will work with persons with disabilities and disabled people’s organizations, to build their capacity on climate change and raise awareness so that they can be empowered, and work with government and the private sector to design effective climate change policies and strategies, that are inclusive and address the concerns of persons with disabilities.
In view of supporting the following areas:
- Advocacy and communication activities across projects
- Coordination and development of the 2019 National Human Development Report focusing on inequality and leave no one behind in Thailand
- Support the design and implementation of projects, in particular the two above mentioned ones on gender equality within the context of Future of Work and Building the Resilience of Persons with Disabilities to Cope with Climate Change
- Monitoring project progress
- Reporting against progress on projects from an SDG / leave no one behind lens
- Strengthen knowledge on the SDGs and Leave No One Behind agenda among project teams and UNDP partners
- Strengthen knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism in supporting the SDG / 2030 agenda
Results/Expected Outputs:
The expected result from this assignment is to better align the design, implementation, monitoring, reporting and evaluation work of UNDP in Thailand with the SDG framework and 2030 agenda and support integrated approaches to UNDP’s support with regard to research, policy advocacy, technical assistance and projects design, implementation and reporting.
Qualifications/Requirements
Remark: To be eligible to apply to the Talent Programme for Young Professionals with Disabilities, candidates should be living with a disability. Work experience will be an advantage but not a requirement.
Qualifications:
- Hold a Bachelor or Master level degree or be enrolled in a university degree at Master level related to development studies, social science or a field related to UNDP’s work areas
- Interest in the UN and adaptability to a multicultural environment
- Strong commitment to working for sustainable development and human rights
Language skills: English (Mandatory), Level – Fluent.
Conditions of Service:
The contract lasts for the period indicated above with possibility of extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment.
The applicable Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities and normal cost of living expenses. The average monthly Volunteer Living Allowance, as of July 2020, for a National UN Volunteer Specialist, with Bangkok as duty station, is THB 47,000 per month (subject to change based on an exchange rate)
Life, health and permanent disability insurance are included (health insurance for up to 3 dependents).
Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-ln-Grant will be provided in the event the duty station is not within commuting distance from the place of recruitment.
