ABOUT THE ROLE

As Deputy Regional Director (Research), you will provide high level and strategic advice to the Regional Director for East and South East Asia and the Pacific on major human rights trends, developments and key drivers of human rights violations in the region, including legal, political and socio-economic factors.

You will contribute to the development, management and implementation of the research strategy and overall operational plans of the East and South East Asia and the Pacific Regional Office. You will manage research staff and will oversee the effective management of budgetary resources, working closely with the rest of the management team.

You will ensure the effective application of Amnesty International standards of work in areas of responsibility, including Amnesty International’s Quality Assurance Framework for research methodology, outputs and publications, and will represent AI at the highest levels, including with government and inter-governmental officials as well as civil society groups, and media.

ABOUT YOU

With demonstrated knowledge and direct experience of the human rights and political context in the region and an expert understanding of the international human rights legal framework, and relevant regional and national legal frameworks; you will have in-depth experience of human rights research for advocacy purposes: conducting research using a range of appropriate methodologies, analyzing and presenting findings, identifying advocacy targets and applying research-based analysis to campaigning for human rights change.

A practiced leader, you will have experience in a key leadership role in a complex organization ideally based outside the organization’s global “head” office and preferably with experience of maintaining a successful operation during times of organizational change. You will be knowledgeable and experienced in field security issues and will have the ability to manage them appropriately, ideally gained through work in conflict or other high-risk situations;

You will have experience of managing people and teams, of successfully coaching and mentoring people, and encouraging integrated and new ways of working; ability to identify and address skills gaps and experience of capacity building and training.  Candidates for this role must be willing to spend up to 33 percent of the year on mission-related travel, and any fluency in one or more language(s) from the region would be seen as an advantage.
