Background
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) Thailand country program was established in 1976 to assist refugees from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and currently assists refugees and migrants from Burma. IRC operates one of the largest and programmatically diverse humanitarian programs providing essential services to displaced populations in Thailand. Assistance programs encompass health, education, institutional capacity building, gender-based violence prevention and response, water and sanitation, advocacy, protection and legal assistance.
Objectives
This project, Enhancing a community-based multi-sectoral response to gender-based violence in Ban Mai Nai Soi and Ban Mae Surin Karenni refugee camps, implemented by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in collaboration with the Karenni National Women’s Organization (KNWO) aims to ensure that women and girls affected by violence in Ban Mai Nai Soi and Ban Mae Surin refugee camps receive comprehensive, high quality assistance from community-based service providers, allowing them to heal quickly and safely. This will be achieved by improving service delivery at the community and camp levels, so that service providers in the health, psychosocial and justice sectors are supported to continue and improve upon their delivery of high quality, compassionate care to survivors of GBV. This will also be achieved through institutional strengthening, where IRC will support and build the capacity of KNWO to become the lead agency for prevention and response to violence against women and girls in the Karenni refugee camps. IRC-developed GBV-modules and one of these modules is Survivor-Centered Helping Skills. In order to be effective to use this module it requires for the community to have this module into Burmese and Karen.
