Background

Oxfam in Thailand, in partnership with the Alliance Anti-Traffic (AAT) and Friends of Women Foundation (FoW), has been implementing the project “Saving our Daughters” in the northeast of Thailand since 1 October 2016 with financial support from Oxfam Novib. The project has an overall objective to help women and girls, especially Thai and Lao, along the border to be safe from sexual abuse and exploitation by improving the prevention system with the state agencies and schools, as well as providing the protection during the legal process to women and girls that are rescued from entertainment places before sending home safely.

The target areas were originally in 5 provinces in the Northeast of Thailand: Nongkhai, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Mukdahan and Si Sa Ket.  Due to the rapidly changing situation of human trafficking in Thailand in Year 2, the target areas of girls’ rescue are expanded to cover the whole area of the country.

Expected Results

  1. Schools raise awareness of trafficking and the problems caused by unwanted pregnancy in Srisaket, Ubon Ratchathani and Udon Thani provinces
  2. Private sector is aware of the negative effects and legal consequences of sexual exploitation of children and refrains from involvement
  3. Perpetrators and businesses that profit from human trafficking are stopped
  4. Beneficiaries access alternatives to prostitution for their livelihood
    1. Victims are identified
    2. Victims are rescued, taken to safe places and provided appropriate services
    3. Changes are proposed to make government services friendlier to victims and to encourage them to seek assistance
