Consultancy – Creative Movement & Dance Consultant

PROGRAMME: Growing Together Regional Programme

DOMAIN: Creative movement & dance

DATE OF MISSION: May to Oct 2018

I – CONTEXT

Handicap International Federation, under the operating name Humanity & Inclusion (registered trademark) is an independent and impartial international aid organization working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster.

Working alongside persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, our action and testimony are focused on responding to their essential needs, improving their living conditions and promoting respect for their dignity and their fundamental rights.

HI is currently implementing projects in more than 50 countries worldwide.

“Growing Together” is a 4-year regional project implemented by HI and partners in Thailand, Bangladesh and Pakistan in order to support communities to promote the resilience, participation and holistic development (social, emotional, physical, cognitive, moral development) of children in refugee, IDP camps and in host communities.

The project goal is to enable children with disabilities and other vulnerable children (age 0-12) to develop their full potential and develop resilience on an equal basis with other children, through acquire fundamental educational and social skills by actively participating in inclusive play, arts, games, sport, culture, and early years’ education in displacement settings in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Thailand. Through participation in these inclusive activities, we also aim to contribute to the psychosocial support and well-being of vulnerable children.

For this purpose, the project will engage various beneficiaries:

  • Parents of children under five years old to participate in parenting clubs in order to raise their awareness on the importance of play for children and strengthen their knowledge and self-confidence on early child development, child protection and child participation.
  • Children of primary school age to participate in clubs, where they will socialize whilst also learning knowledge — through inclusive play, games, arts, and sports — on 3 main topics: child protection, child participation & inclusion and disaster risk reduction.
  • Local child-development service providers to be more responsive to the needs of boys and girls with disabilities and other vulnerable children, and to implement measures and tools to encourage their inclusion in their services, especially through play.

As mentioned in the objectives above, the Growing Together approach recognises that play (including art, games, dance, theatre, inclusive physical activity, etc.) is an effective way for a child to learn and come to terms with the world around them. Therefore, a child’s right to learn through play is at the centre of the project.

II – OBJECTIVE(S) OF THE CONSULTANCY

The objective of the consultancy is to design and facilitate an inclusive creative movement and dance workshop to build the capacity of adults in using creative movement and dance with children, with and without disabilities. In turn, adults will then use creative movement and dance activities in the context of informal learning, recreational and cultural activities within children’s clubs. Additionally, to complement the workshop, the consultancy requires developing a simple guideline for adults on leading creative movement and dance with children.

The workshop should be an inclusive, participatory, fun, interactive, and most importantly, a movement and dance-based learning experience which builds the:

  • knowledge of adult participants to understand the principles of creative movement and dance, and how it can be used to support personal development, learning and participation
  • ability and confidence of adult participants to lead children with and without disabilities in making movement
  • ability of project staff and volunteers on how to make adaptations to support inclusion of persons with a disability

III – METHODOLOGY OF WORK, TIMELINE AND LOCATION

  1. Description of work:

The consultant is expected to carry out the following tasks:

Desk Phase

  1. Desk review of relevant documents to understand the Growing Together project, project context, and beneficiary group (ex: HI project proposal, M&E framework, etc.). Based on the desk review, the consultant will refine the methodology to be used and develop a field work plan for the assignment. These elements will be incorporated in an inception report written by the consultant.
  2. Analyze the learning needs and experiences of the project staff and beneficiary group based on the previous desk review and primary and/or secondary data sources.
  3. Using information from steps 1 and 2, develop a participatory, inclusive workshop to teach adults on using creative movement and dance with children.
  4. Develop a simple and easy to understand guideline for leading inclusive, creative movement & dance sessions with children. This could include for example, an outline of key elements of a dance and movement session, guidance on how to make adaptations for being inclusive in creative movement, planning template for those who will facilitate dance and movement sessions with children, etc.
  5. Develop and compile any other necessary supplementary resources to support participants in their understanding and practice of using creative movement and dance for the learning, development, participation and psychosocial support of vulnerable children, including those with disabilities (ex: workshop handouts, worksheets, PPTs, videos, music, etc.).

Field Phase

  1. Facilitate 3 creative movement and dance workshops for groups of approximately 10-15 adults who have no training or background in dance, creative movement or somatic movement. This will include adapting each workshop as needed so that they are culturally relevant and appropriate for each of the 3 contexts (Thailand, Bangladesh, Pakistan).

  1. Time and location:

The consultancy will work remotely from his/her country of residence during the desk phases before and after field missions, and will work under the supervision of the Regional Technical Coordinator.
