Job title: Counsellor Supervisor

Location: Mae Sot and SMRU clinics

Probation: SMRU can terminate position at 3 months if performance inadequate.

 

Introduction
SMRU is a field station of the faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research UNit (MORU) supported by the Welcome Trust (UK).

The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalized populations living on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border in the Mae Sot area, Tak Province. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.

This combination of health care and research makes SMRU unique. The research agenda is driven by the questions we face in our clinical practice and whether clinical or laboratory based, our studies are designed to be of relevance to the population we serve

Since 2009, SMRU is engaged also in Tuberculosis program with activities on active and passive case findings, diagnosis and treatment of TB patients with updated protocol and best quality of care in full cooperation with national programs and other stakeholders. The post holder will be based at Maesot, with requirement to work at TB clinics and occasionally to work on other SMRU clinics.

 

Report to:  TB program director

Staff under supervision:  Counsellors

 

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • To supervise the counsellors on therapeutic education and adherence counselling
  • To monitor the performance and roster of counsellors in TB and other SMRU clinics
  • To provide upgrade and refresher training to counsellors
  • To ensure provision of DOT by DOT providers
  • To develop health education material if necessary
  • To assist counsellors in the provision of counselling (including psychological-social aspect of counselling) to patients with difficulties to adherence to treatment especially those who need social support and counselling for psycho-social support
  • To facilitate bi-weekly meeting for discussion on case-holding and other administrative issues
  • To identify peer supporters and formation of peer support group
  • To facilitate bi-weekly or at least monthly peer-support activities
  • To identify and establish a link with other organization who can support for social support to HIV infected and affected family members, especially for children
  • To share any issues related to patients’ adherence to treatment with medical team and find solution within the team for the best interest of patients
  • To ensure proper collection of adherence and counselling data

 

Essential criteria

  • 3-5 years of experience in counselling and TB/HIV work
  • Involve in community engagement and understand local nature
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Fluent in English , Karen and Burmese
  • Ability to write reports.
  • Computer literate (at least send-receive email , Microsoft word and excel program)
  • Professional attitude
  • High leadership skills
  • Supervising experience
  • Good in decision making
  • Willingness to work with patients with an infectious disease
  • Ability to keep strict confidentiality on all work related information
  • Toleration of working under pressure
  • The ability to motivate and be part of the team

 

Desirable criteria

  • Attention to details
  • Interested in to be trained and learn new things
  • Experience with chronic disease preferred
