The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international non-governmental organisation with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. The organisation was founded in November 1980 and has a presence in over 50 countries. JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support of an international office in Rome. The style of JRS service is human and spiritual, working in situations of greatest need, seeking the long-term wellbeing of refugees and displaced persons, while not neglecting their immediate or urgent needs. JRS offers opportunities to a wide variety of staff, local and international, while maintaining a realistic and localised scheme of salary/stipend, insurance, etc.
In Thailand, JRS manages four programmes spread throughout urban and rural areas serving refugees, asylum seekers and migrants. JRS Thailand has field offices in Bangkok, Mae Hong Son, Mae Sot (Tak). The main areas of work include education, psycho-social services, livelihoods, emergency assistance, advocacy and protection. Purpose of the Position
JRS has been working with Karenni Education Department (KnED) in Ban Mai Nai Soi and Ban Mae Surin refugee camps in Mae Hong Son province of Thailand since 1997. JRS partners with the KnED to implement and deliver both formal and non-formal educational services and training in the following areas: Primary, Secondary, Special Education, Home School Liaison Project, Parent Education, Teacher Training, Curriculum Development and School Administration & Management. It is currently providing assistance to over 4000 children and about 300 teachers in 8 primary schools, 5 middle schools and 2 high schools in two refugee camps. The primary goal of this support is to ensure the continuity of education while simultaneously developing the capacity of refugee educators for future self-sufficiency.
The JRS Project Director/Education Coordinator will provide technical support and supervision to both JRS education programme staff and the KnED partner to ensure that the quality education services are delivered and sustained.
Relations: Assistant Project Officer directly reports to the Project Director, Mae Hong Son and will work closely to provide technical assistance and support to both JRS and KnED staffs.
Key Responsibilities:
A. Program Development and Management
• Works closely with Project Director and JRS Thailand program officer in project management, reporting, monitoring and project proposals.
• Works closely with the Project Director, help generate ideas for activities, carry out needs assessments, review proposals and draft budgets;
• Assists the project staff in collecting data, preparing and submitting reports (monthly, quarterly, 6-momth, annual, etc.).
• Assists and coordinates with JRS and KnED project staffs in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating project activities.
• Help the team to identify individuals who could benefit from JRS programmes – including emergency financial assistance and skills trainings;
B. External Relations and Representation
• Build effective working relationships with local stakeholders through participation in networking meetings with Thai authorities, local NGOs, INGOs and CBOs;
• Represent JRS in different meetings, when needed
Qualifications & Experience:
• Thai Nationality
• University degree holder
• Experience in management/supervision of education related projects/activities
• Fluent in Thai and English.
• Ability to speak Burmese or Karen is an advantage.
• Adaptability, patient, self-motivated, and service-minded
• Understanding of and empathy with refugee communities
• Strong teamwork skills, able to work successfully in a multi-cultural
