Job title: Entomology lab assistant

Location: Mae Sot

Contract: 3 month (with possibly extension)

 

Introduction
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to i) treat and care for patients with malaria, ii) undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment, and iii) to advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.

Shoklo Malaria Research Unit has a laboratory position available for enthusiastic persons interested in entomology research. We are seeking for full time lab assistants to work on mosquito vector-borne diseases. The post-holders will be involved in the epidemiological studies involving malaria vector.

Report to: Head of Entomology Lab

 

Task and Responsibilities

  1. Sorting of the mosquitoes collected in the villages (including preparing blue-tubes, tube labeling and filling the collection forms)

 

  1. Identification of anopheles at the species level using morphological identification key

 

  1. Cutting of the mosquitoes in order to allow for a specific detection the plasmodium sporozoites

 

  1. Data-entry

 

  1. Ordering and inventory of the reagents and consumables

 

Essential Criteria

  • Secondary school certificate or higher
  • Basic English and Thai
  • Willingness to live in Mae Sot
  • Willingness to learn different techniques
  • Ability to work as part of multinational team
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends
  • Able to work under pressure

Desirable Criteria

  • Fluent Thai or Karen
  • Previous mosquito experience
  • Experience in research
