Job title: Entomology lab technician

Location: Mae Sot

Contract: 3 month (with possibly extension)

 

Introduction
The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station attached to the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. It is part of the Mahidol Oxford Research Unit (MORU) which is a collaborative effort between Mahidol and Oxford Universities, and is part-funded by a UK charity, the Wellcome Trust. SMRU’s aims are to i) treat and care for patients with malaria, ii) undertake research into malaria in this area in order to determine the best methods of prevention and treatment, and iii) to advise on the treatment and the control of malaria in the South East Asia region and more widely.

Shoklo Malaria Research Unit has a laboratory position available for enthusiastic persons interested in entomology research. We are seeking for full time technicians to work on mosquito vector-borne diseases. The post-holders will be involved in the epidemiological studies involving malaria vector.

Report to: Head of Entomology Lab

 

Task and Responsibilities

  1. DNA extraction
  • DNA extraction using CTAB protocol (including buffer preparation and reagents aliquoting)
  • Control of the DNA extraction using a Nanodrop spectrophotometer
  • Pooling of the DNA extracts
  • Data entry

 

  1. PCR
  • PCR sibling species to identify species among sibling species complex of anopheles (including reagent aliquoting, master mix preparation, using thermocycler, gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing and data entry/analysis of the results)
  • PCR plasmodium in order to monitor malaria transmission (including reagent aliquoting, master mix preparation, use of a real-time thermocycler and analysis/data entry of the results)

 

  1. Bioassay
  • Bioassay to assess insecticide resistance in malaria vectors (including identification of alive anopheles, rearing for few days, performing insecticide-based assay, analysis of the results and data-entry)

 

  1. Reporting
  • Reporting and communicating results

 

  1. Supervising
  • Supervising the storage and the inventory of the samples.

 

Essential 

  • Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent
  • Thai national
  • Fluent in English
  • Willingness to live in Mae Sot
  • Willingness to learn different techniques
  • Ability to work as part of multinational team
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends
  • Able to work under pressure

Deairable Criteria

  • Fluent Thai
  • Karen and Burmese is an asset
  • Previous mosquito experience
  • Experience in research
