Background/IRC Summary:
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to humanitarian crises worldwide, helping people affected by conflict and disaster restore their health, safety, education, livelihoods, and dignity. Founded in 1933 at Albert Einstein’s request, the IRC operates in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities.
Thailand hosts more than 90,000 verified refugees in nine camps along the Thai-Myanmar border. In line with the Royal Thai Government’s policy to promote self-reliance and access to the right to work for displaced person, new opportunities have emerged to enhance for self-reliance and social cohesion. However continued policy advocacy, technical support, and coordination remain necessary to support the effective implementation of these initiatives. At the same time, maintaining essential services remains critical as the government advances the transition of camp services. In this context, IRC has planned a gradual transition of its role from directly providing legal assistance services to supporting government authorities in delivering access to justice services during this transition period.
The IRC Protection and Empowerment Program enhances the safety, resilience, and self-reliance of displaced populations along the Thailand-Myanmar border through integrated protection services, skills development, and system-strengthening initiatives. The program promotes gender equality, diversity, and inclusion while advancing evidence-based approaches to improve protection outcomes.
