Job Title:           Education Coordinator                    

Reports to:        Project Director

Location:           Mae Hong Son, Thailand

 

Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organization, with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for refugees. Our advocacy flows from a service that is direct, pastoral, human and exposed to the sufferings and limitations of refugee life. Through our presence we help to sustain the goodness and hope in people who live in situations of evil and who have reason to despair. To support such an approach, JRS welcomes people who are able to contribute to and draw from the mission of JRS and the desire to share in the lives of the people we serve.

 

In Thailand, JRS serves refugees and asylum seekers in urban context and in two camps of Ban Mai Naisoi and Ban Mai Surin in Mae Hong Son. The main areas of work include education, psychosocial services, protection, and emergency assistance. In the two camps, JRS Thailand is the main actor in delivering basic education, in partnership with the camp committee and education department.

 

Objectives

The JRS Education Coordinator provides oversight of all education activities inside of the camps aiming to provide quality education through students’ growth, school management, and capacitated teachers. The objectives of the position are:

  • Enhancing Basic Education Quality: Elevate K-12 standards by institutionalizing Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) and Socio-Emotional Learning (SEL) frameworks, while proactively addressing education access barriers for students in BMN, BMS, and IDP schools.
  • Curriculum Alignment & Harmonization: Align basic education curricula used across the camps and the country of origin to support seamless transitions, including potential integration into Thai schools.
  • Institutional Strengthening: To build robust school management systems within BMN and BMS schools and extend technical capacity and support to IDP schools.
  • Strategic Oversight & Operational Management: To ensure the agile delivery of Education in Emergencies (EiE) and maintain high standards of program accountability through the design, implementation management, and monitoring of robust educational interventions.
  • Partnership Synergy: To foster a seamless collaborative environment between JRS staff, the Karenni Education Department (KnED), Karenni Teacher Training and Curriculum Development Programme (KnTTCDP), Karenni Women Organisation (KnWO), camp committees, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure universal access to quality education across all project sites.

 

Managing the work of JRS Education Programme in Mae Hong Son

Responsibilities

  • To safeguard the vision, identity, and unity of JRS at the project level.
  • To ensure the successful achievement of programme objectives and implementation of activities integrating the JRS mission, values, and standards
  • To assist in the development of stories and communication materials for JRS and donor partners.
  • To represent JRS in stakeholders meeting with KnED, Camp Committees, Education Sub-Committee of the Committee for Coordination of Services to Displaced Persons in Thailand  (CCSDPT), Ministry of Education of the Royal Thai Government, and other relevant stakeholders.

 

Programmatic/Technical

  • Provide on-going technical supervision in the areas of education programme development and implementation from curriculum development, textbook development including the instructional designs & lesson plans, and teachers training.
  • Provide technical support in the project development and manage the implementation and monitoring of JRS education projects in Mae Hong Son, for its accountability.
  • Strengthen KnED capacity to provide leadership and good governance of the education system.

 

Finance/Administration

  • Assist and oversee education staff, teachers, and partners to keeping accurate records, statistics and accounts.

 

Communication/Reporting

  • Communicate project updates, learnings and challenges with the country support team during regular staff and project directors’ meetings and regular project reporting.

 

Staff Care

  • Provide support and supervise MTB-MLE Coordinator and MTB-MLE  Officer.
  • Provide SEL, Peace and Reconciliation trainings to KnED Staff.
  • Collaborate to ensure good communication and trusting relationship between JRS and KnED, in a supportive and cooperative fashion.
  • Follow JRS Code of Conduct and Child Safeguarding Policy.

 

Qualification:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in education with 5 years of teaching/training experiences and materials development, and/; or with another relevant degree with at least 7 years of experiences.
  • Experience in curriculum development is preferred.
  • Programme management experience, specifically; planning, monitoring, evaluation, data collection, and assessment.
  • Previous development/humanitarian experience and/or experience in limited-resource, challenging environments.
  • Understanding and experiences in Education in Emergency/INEE is preferred.
  • Fluent in written and oral English and Burmese languages; proficiency in other ethnic Language an advantage.
  • Adaptability, patient and self-motivated with strong teamwork skills.
  • Experience and exposure to the refugee situation are preferred.
