Net Free Seas Community Coordinator

Organisation: Environmental Justice Foundation

Location: Thailand (based in-country; travel to project sites required)

Contract type: Full-time, fixed-term contract (renewable annually)

Salary range: THB 45,000 – 55,000/month (depending on experience)

Reports to: SEA Plastics Project Manager

About Net Free Seas

Net Free Seas (NFS) tackles Abandoned, Lost, and Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG) and marine litter through community-led action. We believe the fight against plastic pollution is won at the community level, working alongside fishers, coastal communities, and local stakeholders to remove, prevent, and manage marine debris while building long-term stewardship of the ocean.

Today, NFS works with over 40 communities across Thailand and Indonesia. As the project grows, we need to move from a network of individual community relationships into something more structured, sustainable, and scalable, a model that doesn't just work in one place, but can be replicated across Thailand, Southeast Asia, and eventually internationally.

Who we are looking for

We're looking for a Community Coordinator, based in Thailand who can take NFS's community engagement to the next level. You'll be entrusted with exciting, defining opportunities such as:

  1. Formalise the NFS community network design and implement a structure (whether that's a coalition, a membership model, a network charter, or something else entirely) that turns 40+ individual community relationships into a coherent, self-sustaining network.

  2. Build a replicable model, create a framework, playbook, or toolkit that allows the NFS community approach to be adapted and scaled in new provinces, new countries in SEA, and beyond.

Alongside this, you'll be the person who keeps things moving on the ground, coordinating with communities day-to-day, and representing NFS in rooms with high-level government officials to advocate for policy support and recognition.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the primary point of coordination between NFS and its 40+ partner communities, private sector and government partners in Thailand
  • Design and lead the formalisation of the NFS community network (structure, governance, communication systems)
  • Develop a scalable, replicable model for community engagement that can be adapted for new regions and countries
  • Represent NFS in advocacy conversations with government officers, agencies, and other high-level stakeholders
  • Build and maintain relationships with new communities, partners, and institutional stakeholders
  • Manage day-to-day administrative and coordination tools/systems to keep multi-community operations organised and on track
  • Identify gaps, ask questions, and reach out to experts, partners, or peer organisations when you don't have the answer
  • Work independently, take ownership of outcomes, and drive initiatives from idea to implementation

What we're looking for

  • Strong coordination and organisational skills, you can juggle many moving parts across many communities without dropping the ball
  • Experience working directly with communities (fisher communities, coastal/rural communities, or similar preferred)
  • Comfort and confidence engaging with government officials and other high-level stakeholders, this includes diplomacy, patience, and persistence
  • A builder's mindset: comfortable creating structure and systems where none exist yet
  • Strong self-direction, able to work independently and manage your own workload and priorities
  • Competence with admin tools and project management systems (or a fast learner who can pick them up quickly)
  • Not afraid to say "I don't know, let me find out", a genuine willingness to learn, ask questions, and reach out to others
  • Ambition, someone who can dream big about what a community network could become, not just maintain what already exists
  • Fluent in Thai and working proficiency in English (spoken and written)
  • Based in Thailand, with willingness to travel to community sites regularly
  • Experience working with communities in Thailand’s Deep South and/or fluency in Yawi is preferred; candidates without this background must demonstrate a strong willingness to learn and engage.

Nice to have

  • Prior experience in environmental NGOs, marine conservation, plastic/waste management projects, community/labour/environmental defender movement building
  • Experience with policy advocacy or working alongside government bodies
  • Regional (SEA) network or experience working across multiple countries
