 Elephant Conservation Project Assistant

 

Grade: BG06–BG07 (Practitioner)

Location: Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Advertised Salary: THB 35,000–45,000 per month

Contract Period: 1 year (with possible extension, subject to performance and funding)

Contract Type: Fixed-Term Staff Contract

Reports To: Project Manager

 

Key Purpose of the Job 

The Elephant Conservation Project Assistant will support for an ongoing initiative aimed at mitigating Human Elephant Conflicts (HEC) and supporting local communities across Thailand. The Assistant will support implementation of field activities, logistics and record-keeping, activity reporting, and communications.

 

The Project Assistant will work closely with the the Project Manager and Project Officer to support implementation of ZSL’s human-elephant conflict mitigation programme and achieve measurable outcomes that balance the coexistence of human and elephant communities, thereby contributing to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Co-develop best-practice guidelines by attending validation meetings with experts and user groups, adjusting best-practice guide content, and finalizing layout for printing
  • Join regional meetings and support workshops including logistics and activity facilitation
  • Support deployment and monitoring of early-warning camera trap system, including setting and checking camera traps, assisting elephant response teams in data collection, and
  • Collect, compile, and record interview and survey data and support data entry
  • Develop communications materials for social media and project dissemination (i.e. flyers, posters, Facebook posts, etc.)
  • Undertake occasional tasks as assigned by the Project Manager or Project Officer as needed

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A bachelor’s degree in social sciences, environment/wildlife or natural resource management, development studies or related fields
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in conservation
  • Excellent written and spoken Thai; Proficiency in English.
  • An ability and willingness to travel and be willing to work outside of normal office hours as necessary.

 

Desirable

  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders including but not limited to Department of National Parks, conservation NGOs, and local communities
  • Familiarity with human-elephant conflict dynamics in Thailand
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs including Word and Excel as well as Canva and GIS
  • Thai drivers licence and ability to drive a manual vehicle.
