Human-Elephant Conflict Mitigation Project Officer

 

Position: Human-Elephant Conflict Mitigation Project Officer

Grade: BG08–BG09 (Professional Level 1 / Officer)

Location: Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Advertised Salary: THB 50,000–60,000 per month

Contract Period: 9 months

Contract Type: Service Contract 

Reports To: Project manager

 

Key Purpose of the Job 

The Human-Elephant Conflict Mitigation Project Officer will provide technical and implementation support for an ongoing initiative aimed at mitigating Human Elephant Conflicts (HEC) and supporting local communities. The Officer will support field delivery, technical or outreach execution, stakeholder engagement, internal planning support, and reporting.

 

The Project Officer will work closely with the Project Manager, Agronomy and Social Safeguarding Officer, and Programme Coordinator to support implementation of ZSL’s human-elephant conflict mitigation projects. The officer will also work with a wide array of stakeholders, including but not limited to, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), the Department of National Parks Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), and local community leaders. The Project Officer will support on production of key project deliverables including a human-elephant conflict best-practice guide and regional case study reports. The Officer will help ZSL achieve measurable outcomes that balance the coexistence of human and elephant communities, thereby contributing to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

 

Key Responsibilities

Field activities

  • Co-develop best-practice guidelines by attending validation meetings with experts and user groups, adjusting best-practice guide content, and finalizing layout for printing and dissemination
  • Join regional meetings and facilitate workshop activities including but not limited to training of HEC monitoring, best-practice mitigation strategies, compensation, and decentralization
  • Draft and deliver activity reports and support drafting and delivery of regional case study report and final donor report

 

Stakeholder coordination

  • Coordinate with relevant stakeholders (including NGOs, government, private sector, communities) to organize meetings and project activities
  • Coordinate and work with implementing partners for activity planning, implementation, and logistics

 

Additional Tasks:

  • Manage logistics and financial reporting for project activities
  • Ensure alignment with ZSL FAIRER social safeguarding framework and FPIC protocol for all engagement activities
  • Undertake occasional tasks as assigned by the Project Manager or Programme Coordinator as needed

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A bachelor’s degree in social sciences, environment/wildlife or natural resource management, development studies or related fields. 
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in conservation projects, particularly in delivery of project activities and reporting.
  • Strong understanding of human-elephant conflict dynamics.
  • Experience working and engaging professionally with diverse stakeholder groups including Department of National Parks, conservation NGOs, and local communities
  • Excellent written and spoken Thai and working knowledge of English

 

Desirable

  • Experience working in Kanchanaburi Province or the Western Forest Complex
  • Knowledge of Thai laws and strategies relevant to conservation and human-elephant conflict.
  • Familiarity with donor-funded programmes and requirements.
  • Experience with financial reporting including advances and claims processes.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs including Word and Excel as well as Canva and GIS
  • An ability and willingness to travel and be willing to work outside of normal office hours as necessary.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • High professional integrity and accountability.
