Introduction
SMRU is a field station of the faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU) supported by the Wellcome Trust (UK).
The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalized populations living on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border in the Mae Sot area, Tak Province. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.
This combination of health care and research makes SMRU unique. The research agenda is driven by the questions we face in our clinical practice and whether clinical or laboratory based, our studies are designed to be of relevance to the population we serve.
Tasks and Responsibilities
Team and laboratory management
- Procurement
- Coordinate with laboratory admin for monthly laboratory orders and follow-up with procurement team
- Contact sell representative, provide support to procurement team to find best manufacturer and suppliers
- Logistic and equipment
- Manage maintenance needs for haematology equipment and coordinate with laboratory Equipment manager
- Check equipment and identify problems if any (daily / weekly / monthly / 6-months and yearly)
- Manage urgent requests
- Coordinate with technical assistance when needed
- Data management:
- Able to manage data generated from routine activities of the team including how to record, store and enter raw data
- Communicate and work with data management team when support is needed for CBC database and support the head of laboratory for other database.
- Safety:
- Be aware of risks related to all activities on going in the Haematology and molecular lab.
- Implement safety procedures defined by laboratory safety officer and head of Haematology laboratory
- Be able to write, review and manage SOPs,
- Grants:
- Aware of all haematology grants including budget details and end dates.
- IT:
- Able to manage Haematology Laboratory folder on the SMRU server
- Able to communicate efficiently with SMRU IT department
- Project management
- Be aware of all project objectives and achievements
- Be able to reproduce all laboratory procedures implemented by the team
- Be able to support and supervise each haematology team members
- Be able to spot out issues, drift, emergency situations and find solutions
- Be able to manage workflow and plan activities at short, mid and long-term perspectives.
- Be able to produce basic reports of activities for internal dissemination to the team
- Communicate with other SMRU laboratories
- Support Head of Laboratory in communication with other SMRU department, in particular with Doctor department, for routine and study sample analysis and planning.
- Collaborations
- Able to communicate with Thai and foreigner collaborators for projects and trainings
- Research activities
- In charge of setting-up new (or adapting published) laboratory procedures according to research plans discussed with the head of Haematology laboratory.
Education
- Master of Science or other relevant field
Essential criteria
- Previous experience in research or clinical laboratory (hematology, molecular biology or equivalent)
- Experience in using flow-cytomety
- English (advanced level, spoken and written)
- Ability to generate high quality data including experiment, data entry and analysis and reporting
- Strong motivation and working capacities
- Team spirit and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
- Precision and organization
- Ability to supervise projects/co-workers
- Willingness to learn/develop new methods
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in molecular diagnosis or diagnostics
- Previous experience in project management
- Communication skills: ability to speak/write Thai, Karen and/or Burmese would be highly appreciated
