Location: Mae Ramat District, TAK Province, SMRU work area

 

Introduction
Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SMRU) is a field station of the faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, and is part of the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit (MORU) supported by the Wellcome (UK).

The main objective of SMRU is to provide quality health care to the marginalized populations living on both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border in the Mae Ramat, Phob Phra, Mae Sot, Um Phang and Tha Song Yang area, Tak Province. This is achieved by the dual activities of research and humanitarian services, with an emphasis on maternal-child health and infectious diseases.

This combination of health care and research makes SMRU unique. The research agenda is driven by the questions we face in our clinical practice and whether clinical or laboratory based, our studies are designed to be of relevance to the population we serve

 

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • To perform laboratory experiments with human malaria parasites including parasite culture and drug testing.
  • To assist the senior lab technician with sample management including sample sorting, storage and inventory.
  • To assist the senior lab technician with data management including data collection, entry and curation.
  • To assist the senior lab technician with supplies and equipment management including stock inventory, procurement and maintenance.
  • To report work activities, progress and issues to senior lab technician and lab head.
  • To keep up to date with scientific knowledge in the relevant fields including participating to trainings, tutorials and journal clubs.
  • Other duties as directed by the senior lab technician or lab head.

 

Essential Criteria

  • A degree in Biology, Life Science or Medical Technology
  • Fluency in Thai, Karen, Burmese and/or English
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Able to work occasionally during night and weekend shifts
  • Basic IT skills including Microsoft Office

 

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in a clinical or research laboratory
  • A track record of contributions to scientific publications
