Thailand Campaigner

The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) exists to protect the natural world and defend our basic human right to a secure environment.

EJF works internationally to inform policy and drive systemic, durable reforms to protect our environment and defend human rights. We investigate and expose abuses and support environmental defenders, Indigenous peoples, communities, and independent journalists on the frontlines of environmental injustice. Our campaigns aim to secure peaceful, equitable and sustainable futures. Our investigators, researchers, filmmakers, and campaigners work with grassroots partners and environmental defenders across the globe.

Our work to secure environmental justice aims to protect our global climate, ocean, forests, and wildlife and defend basic human rights. We have worked in Thailand since 2014 to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses on fishing vessels, actively promote improvements to policy-making, corporate governance, and management of fisheries.

EJF is seeking to employ a ‘Campaigner’ to join the Thailand team. This position will include conducting both desk-based and field-based research and investigations work alongside EJF colleagues and local partners into a range of topics including IUU, the practice of bottom trawling, assisting with ongoing communications and collaborations with relevant Thai Government ministries and departments and engagement with a range of stakeholders across the fishing industry aimed at progressing reforms.

The role offers opportunities for career growth and personal development, working closely with a motivated and talented team of campaign and communications experts across Asia. Successful candidates should be comfortable working independently, be adept at conducting both desk-based and field-based research, confident in public speaking, and be prepared to travel within Thailand.

Post Title: Campaigner

Type of appointment: Fixed-term

Remuneration: 50,000-70,000 baht per month, depending on experience

Duration of contract: 12 months (potentially renewable or convertible to a permanent position, subject to performance review)

Location: Bangkok based with opportunity to travel often.

This position is open to Thai citizens only.

Job descriptions and responsibilities:

• Lead advocacy efforts on specific advocacy priorities, representing EJF to high-profile policymakers, government agencies, practitioners, think tanks, academic partners, the media, and the public. Work closely with global EJF advocates to support the development of EJF advocacy strategies and activities on those priority issues.
• Conduct strategic advocacy with government officials, elected representatives, members of the diplomatic community, representatives of UN and other international agencies, representatives of non-governmental organisations, and other key decision-makers, influencers, and stakeholders with a view towards addressing human rights concerns and improving the human rights environment in Thailand.
• Monitor operational developments in fisheries governance, environment, human rights, politics, migration, human trafficking and forced labour. Reviewing available information in situation reports, cables, correspondence, media, etc. Identify matters for follow-up and the need for action, ensure consultation and input from the actors involved, and help coordinate timely responses to issues and questions raised in the field, as well as monitor and follow up on outstanding issues.
• Produce materials for advocacy, communications, and media purposes on EJF priorities through country visits and desk-based research, including drafting or inputting into reports, briefing papers, submissions to government consultations and web content.
• Identify and investigate priority human rights issues through interviews, focus group discussions, site visits, document collection, secondary research, and other forms of both qualitative and quantitative evidence collection in line with best practices.
• Work with partners to identify objectives and develop strategies, reinforce strengths, and address weaknesses. Develop and conduct tailored trainings or participatory workshops, assist with research and documentation efforts, and implement other tasks to respond to the needs identified by partners.

Essential skills and experience:

• Fluency in Thai
• Professional proficiency in the English language
• A degree in any relevant discipline (journalism, social science, environmental science, marine sciences, etc)
• Relevant work experience (journalism, NGOs, private sector, field work, etc)
• Demonstrable experience forming and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders
• Strong communication and writing skills
• Ability to use desk-based internet research to gather information
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc)

Desirable skills and experience:

• A higher degree in a relevant discipline
• Demonstrable interest in or experience working on any of the following topics; bottom trawling, destructive fishing practices, fish stock assessments or biodiversity assessments, marine conservation issues, global seafood industry.
• Professional camera experience (film or photography)
• Ability to work independently
• Experience in conducting field-based research projects
• Fluency in additional Southeast Asian languages (Khmer, Indonesian or Burmese) an asset
• Car driving license
