Thai Language Trainer
Achieve for Youth Employability Project in Mae Sot
1. Background
Myanmar migrant youths in Tak Province face multiple overlapping barriers to securing decent employment opportunities in Thailand. Lack of language proficiency, digital literacy, and technical and vocational skills leave many youth unqualified for available jobs, especially in sectors such as hospitality. A significant portion of these youth lack proper registration documents, forcing them to work informally without legal protections and rendering them vulnerable to various forms of risk and exploitation. This lack of formal registration, in addition to displacement-related education disruptions, often render Myanmar migrant youth less able to access and/or officially demonstrate education and training. Gender inequalities and physical disabilities compound these challenges. As highlighted in SCT’s recent assessment, the two main barriers to meaningful progressive employment for Myanmar migrant youth in Tak Province, are lack of soft skills and vocational capacity and lack of viable pathways for accessing opportunities beyond the limit of the exploitative options available to migrants in Thailand.
To address the two root causes of unemployment and underemployment identified through the Gender Sensitive Labor Market Assessment, (low employability capacities and limited exposure to opportunities in the Thai labor market), SCT has designed Youth Employment project to ensure that vulnerable migrant youths are capacitated in hard and soft skills and able to act on existing employment opportunities, capitalizing on existing networks and pathways to gain and retain decent jobs, while remaining gender-sensitive and cognizant of other vulnerabilities within the target community.
The project's overall objective is that vulnerable youth in Mae Sot are better enabled to access decent work opportunities in the hospitality sector in Thailand.
One of the project’s key outputs is to equip youth with critical 21st-century skills, including proficiency in the language of targeted labor markets (Thai in Thailand). The course emphasizes practical application in real-world scenarios. Through planned training, participants will gain the ability to communicate effectively in basic Thai within a workplace context.
