Consultant – Business and human rights researcher

April 2023

The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) is an international non-governmental organisation whose mission is to promote respect for the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. FIDH is a federation of 188 national human rights organisations active on five continents. It defends the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international treaties.

FIDH's "Globalisation and Human Rights" desk documents corporate abuse and publishes reports, conducts advocacy with various actors (States, companies, etc.) and supports rights holders whose human rights have been violated in their legal actions against companies. The desk is currently seeking a Thai and English-speaking business and human rights researcher, who will participate in the elaboration of a community-based human rights impact assessment report for an investment project in Thailand.

Objectives of the mission

Conduct a community-based human rights impact assessment of an investment project affecting local communities in Thailand, following the Getting it Right methodology. The project will be conducted jointly with other FIDH staff, one of FIDH’s member organisations in Thailand and affected villagers and human rights defenders. Community-based HRIAs assess human rights impacts and risks related to the project, with a view to holding actors accountable.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to research planning and project management, coordinate with and regularly update teams working on the project
  • Conduct data collection with local communities affected by the investment project and other stakeholders (academic, NGO, authorities, corporate actors, investors...)
  • Conduct desk research and analysis
  • Represent FIDH with different actors and partners connected to the project
  • Draft a report and if necessary other outputs based on the research findings

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Fluency in Thai and English
  • Training and experience in human rights
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently

Considered a plus:

  • Experience conducting research and documentation on business and human rights issues
  • Experience working with grass-roots activists and local communities
  • Familiarity with community-based human rights impact assessments or other participatory research methodologies

This is a consultancy position for 6 to 7 months, starting ASAP, until mid-November, with a monthly compensation of 50,000 THB. Priority will be given to candidates based in Thailand. Possibility to work at FIDH’s office in Bangkok or remotely. Occasional presence at FIDH offices in Bangkok and availability for field trips will be required.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the deadline for submission is 28 April 2023.
