1. About Plan International

Plan International, we strive to advance children’s rights and equality for girls all over the world. As an independent development and humanitarian organisation, we work alongside children, young people, our supporters and partners to tackle the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children. We support children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood and enable children to prepare for and respond to crises and adversity. We drive changes in practice and policy at local, national and global levels using our reach, experience and knowledge. For over 80 years we have been building powerful partnerships for children, and we are active in over 75 countries.

Result from Plan International study in 2018 showed that 60% were involved in family-owned agricultural activities, making them essentially unpaid workers.  Those in wage employment had informal jobs earning and low income. Compounding the scarcity of local jobs, many do not have sufficient entrepreneurial or vocational skills to thrive in a post-COVID-19 economy.

Plan International Thailand is implementing an eighteen-month project, “Building a local eco-tourism network of community-based enterprises for Thailand’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery” in formation of local tourism enterprises.

2. Background

The project is aligned with Futuremakers’ outcome on sustained growth of youth-led/female-led & inclusive SMEs. The total number of participants that will directly benefit from this project will be 800 young people aged 16-35 (60% women and girls) in 20 communities. The target communities are usually not the government’s priority to drive local economy and therefore have remained rather invisible in the government’s COVID-19 economic recovery. Through activities in the project, community enterprise (SMEs) will be built and sustained with linkages to local government’s economic plans.

The project will provide 20 targeted community local tourism enterprises consist of 1) entrepreneurship and relevant topics such as management, marketing, financial inclusion, business planning with inclusive approach. 2) upskill trainings for community enterprise members on topics relevant to their business plan such as hospitality, production, handicrafts, eco-trekking, etc.

The project will support community enterprises to develop business plan and presentation to tourism network working team to get seed grant for enterprise’s implementation. We expect that targeted enterprises will develop their products and services to sell and promote both on-line and off-line platforms. In addition, the project aims to work with a network of 20 local/community-based enterprises under 3 district-level clusters, which then are linked up into a local federation. The project like to see increasing of self-employment and increasing of wage and income opportunities. Moreover, marginalized young women can raise up their entrepreneurship issue on policy level in their communities.
